Guest guest
Hi my name is Kath and I really need all your advice. For years I have tried to go vegetarian with no success and finally this year after a bout wuith breast cancer I am making a success out of it. NOw im moving my family over and having kids and teens I really need some guidance. My younger one is fine as she is an animal activist and for her this is all about saving the animals but my teenager hates me and isnt impressed. ironically i am doing this for his own good. The child is 100 lbs over weight and needs to get healthy. My big thing is i want fun foods that will entice him into wanting to try them. do any of you have advice on how to make this a smoother transition ? are there good books i can try ? thanks in advance Kath
Guest guest
Hi Kath! First off, Congrats on beating the breast cancer! Turning veggie is the right move. Question, first, are you going vegetarian or vegan? There's a difference in the food choices I would share with you. Awaiting your response, Lynne katia8791 <kthackham [kthackham] Tuesday, December 10, 2002 2:02 PM New Here - advice please Hi my name is Kath and I really need all your advice. Oh yeah, I have two teenagers. I'd suggest that you find a teenaged girl to go all " I like sensitive guys " on him. I think the easiest way to transition people in that age group is to not hassle them about what they eat outside the house and only set rules about what you are going to prepare or want in your house. Then make familiar looking things. Use artificial, simulated meat like products for lunches outside the house so they don't need to answer questions from peers if they don't want to. Once they find out that a lot of kids will think that being vegetarian is " cool " it gets easier. You might end up with a kid like my daughter, who wears her vegetarianism like a badge, which carries its own set of problems, she's sooo tactful. Guest guest
Kath, The best thing I can tell you is that this has to be his choice. Period. You can't force anyone to be a vegetarian, especially a teenager. You don't want your teenager to hate you. I think you should prepare veggie foods and always have an easy alternative for him to perhaps make himself, like a sandwich. Limit the kinds nonveggie items you buy (ie make it boring). At restaurants, I think you will need to allow him to order what he wants. Hopefully, he'll come around. But you can't make him lose weight, and you can't make him choose healthy foods all the time. Perhaps he'll come around some day. Keep encouraging him to try the veggie things that you have prepared. My latest idea for a fun food is Blanketed Franks. By no means are these low fat, but certainly healthier than the alternative. Serve with a mustard sauce (1/2 mayo and 1/2 Gulden's Spice Brown Mustard) Take Yves Tofu Weiners and cut them into smaller pieces, perhaps 4-8 per hot dog. Take crescent roll tubes that you buy at the supermarket and use the dough to cover the hot dogs. Bake on a cookie sheet as instructed on the tube. Also try veggie chili served in a carved out french roll or mini-loaf. Good luck. You've chosen the right path for yourself. Don't expect over-night success with your son. Set your expectations low and you may be surprised some day! Tracy - <kthackham Tuesday, December 10, 2002 12:01 PM New Here - advice please > Hi my name is Kath and I really need all your advice. Guest guest
Excellent response. My thoughts exactly. There are some recipe books for the casual vegetarian or people learning to switch. My husband isn't veg but my kids are so I am always looking for things everybody would like. We use the Pillsbury books you can get at the grocery store checkout line. The other night I made chili with the burger crumbles and followed instructions on the back of a can of chili tomatoes and chili tomatoes sauce and added a packet of McCormick chili seasoning. It was so good and thick and hearty. Also think of foods that are veg that everyone eats without knowing its vegetarian - stuffed shells, mac n cheese, pizza, many Mexican, Chinese, and Indian dishes are vegetarian. Good luck. Mary M. Guest guest
My advice is to NOT use fake meat products. If someone is resistent to vegetarian food, they are not going to find fake lunch meat, etc. enjoyable and are going to be more anti-veg. Try to make more ethnic foods where the meat is not the center of attention. Just be sure to read the label. Some have beef fat in them.
