Guest guest
Hello all, do you give your kids multi-vits? I always want to resist becoz I feel I am telling pple veg*ns do not have enough nutrition becoz they do not eat meat, therefore we need to make that up by giving them smth out of a bottle. But I can;t help it, becoz you parents out there know how toddlers eat.... So.... if you do, can you give recommendations? I am getting all giddy after trying to do a search for liquid children vitamin online... Thanks... Janis dd Valerie Lotus (18mths) Janis Tan MK Every object, Every being, Is a jar full of delight. Guest guest
I give me children vitamins. You are right about the way toddlers eat. I don't think it could hurt them. Right now they are taking Scooby Doo (I think it might me One-A-day brand). I also put ovaltine in my son's soymilk and lately have also been adding flax seed oil. Mary M. Guest guest
I use a liquid multi-vitamin called 'Floradix " . They have several varieties and my son takes the children's multi. It is a German product but I have found it at most health food stores I've tried. It is vegetarian-not sure about vegan but you could check. Guest guest
Janis, I too am raising my daughter (20 month Aidan) vegan and have been using a multi-vitamin supplement. Upon the recommendation of her pediatrician, I have been using Enfamil Poly-Vi-Sol with iron. However, after reading your e-mail, I read the label more carefully and discovered the main ingredient is glycerin, although not specified as vegetable or other. I would be very interested in learning of any vegan liquid multivitamin supplements available. In the meantime, I will contact Enfamil to inquire about the origin of the glycerin used in their product. Good luck with your search! ~Robin (new to ) > " Janis MK Tan " <janis_mktan > > > Children's vitamins or not?! >Fri, 20 Dec 2002 14:54:25 -0700 > >Hello all, > >do you give your kids multi-vits? >I always want to resist becoz I feel I am telling pple veg*ns do not have >enough nutrition becoz they do not eat meat, therefore we need to make that >up by giving them smth out of a bottle. Guest guest
I give my children a multi-vitamin. They are veg*n, and generally eat very nutritious food at home. But, they eat at school and other people's homes. I don't trust all the chips, candies and other meatless option snack foods out there. They are not supposed to share other peoples lunch, but I have seen my daughter out in the playground, eating other peoples snacks. Try this website for a liquid vitamin supplement. http://www.shaklee.net/ewing-tracy The liquid is called Liqui-Lea. My two boys love it. My daughter does not! She takes some chewables though. Take care,Tracy
Guest guest
My son will be 3 in Feb. and has been vegan all his life. I'm not big on vitamins, but most of the non-veg parents I know give their kids vitamins so I wouldn't think of it as saying your child can't get the nutrients he/she needs from a vegan diet (of course we all do need to supplement with B12). I do however have several different vitamins on hand and use them when I feel it is prudent to do so (for myself or my son). Kidbear vitamins are vegan and are easy to get kids to take since they are 'gummy bears'. They have Vitamin C, Vitamin C and Echinacea, Multi-vitamin, and phytonutrients....those are the four I'm aware of and keep on hand. I buy Kidbear and Pangea's brand of vegan B12 tablets from veganstore.com. Friends of mine own Pangea so I do plug them whenever I get the chance. :-) My son is also still nursing so he does get some nutrients from breastmilk so I just try to eat as healthy as I can for both of us. Since there are many factors involved in nutrition...some nutrients aid in absorption of other nutritients, but may block absorption of others...some nutrients are better used by the body when eaten in 'natural' food form, etc. I tend to not be big on multi-vitamins and I've talked to several doctors who say a daily multi is a waste of money (a lot of the nutrients go right through and are just urinated out). I would look at your child's particular food intake over several days or a week...are they getting a balance of nutrients over this time period? Many children favor a particular food for a while then move to another, but many times they are actually eating a balanced diet if you don't look at it from a meal or daily level. If you notice your child is not getting a partular nutrient, then I would supplement. B12 being the exception...I would always make sure a vegan child has a daily intake of B12 from various sources. If you don't get as much sun in the winter time then I would look into D2 supplements during this time since calcium needs D to be absorbed. Also, many nutrients can be somewhat harmful if taken to excess (diarhea with vitamin C, vitamin D can be harmful in large doses...I would talk to a nutritionists about the differences between D2 other non-veg forms of D, I'm sure everyone is aware of problems with iron overdose, etc.) and usually taking the supplement form is more of an issue than eating the nutrients that naturally occur in food. I would also try to have flax/walnut/hemp in your child's daily diet. We've found ground flax seeds are pretty easy to add to things we already eat and it doesn't take a lot. We also try for seven servings of different fruits and vegetables (usually 4 servings of veggies and 3 of fruit) a day. We average about six. I find shooting for seven insures we get the minimum of 5 a day. The only thing I usually worry about it too much fiber. Since we eat a lot of raw and whole foods and our diet is naturally high in fiber...probably too high for a toddler. I would look up the max daily fiber intake for children your child's age. I think 'Raising Vegetarian Children' has a couple great recipes for children who don't eat a lot of foods...there is a pudding recipe and a smoothy recipe that is packed with great stuff and if very kid pleasing. I think vegfamily.com has the recipe on their website. Good luck! Linda Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Sign up now. http://mailplus. How will anybody know what you give your kids in the privacy of your own home??? As to liquid vitamins, I used to use the Floradix stuff for said picky eater. The chewables are cheaper, though, and he likes the shapes. Be well, Hadass in Winnipeg.
Guest guest
Dear Veggie Friends: I agree that vitamins are a good thing provided it is a high quality vegatarian vitamin. I think that it is best to consider giving your children fresh organic produce it's natural state. That is where the vitamins and minerals really are. Also falx seeds and flax oil are the best thing any child clearly benefit from. The flax offers so many healthful benefits for adults and children. I personally can give testimony to it's benefit. It has helped me with my concentration. Love, Light and Laughter, Lynda Carter
