Guest guest
Hi, We're a soon to be vegan family. My partner and I are going to China Jan 9 to bring home our 9 month old daughter. I asked a La Leche League mom who is a good friend of mine about healthy formula choices and she had no idea (she's doing some research for me) but she was very concerned about the possibility of using a soy based formula since she felt it can cause allergies. She gave me some alternatives for making my own from a book called Nourishing traditions (anyone seen it? I glanced at it and it seemed very anti-vegan to me) but all had cow or goat's milk as the base. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Since she's Chinee its likely she's lactose intolerant to some degree. We will keep her on the formula she is used to while in China and then wean her to something else when she is home. Thanks! Guest guest
I'm very new to this list and a new vegan. But I have been a mom for a long time :-) so I thought I would throw in a thought. At 9 months, she probably is not using formula exclusively. She may already have her first tooth or two and is eating finger foods (soft veggies, cereal, etc). If due to her circumstances she has not been introduced to foods besides formula, you can start that when she gets home. Also, at one year it's very common to reduce the intake of formula and start introducing other sources (such as soy milk) from a cup. For many children who are lactose intolerant, soy is the only digestible formula. It really takes trial and error. Hope this helps. ~Marvelyn - " Bea & Bill " <veggiefamily Friday, December 27, 2002 6:48 PM Re: Digest Number 562 > Hi, > We're a soon to be vegan family. I have a friend who is making this formula, she says that it is a TON of work and it isn't even really vegetarian, let alone vegan, it contains cod liver oil. They also recommend raw milk which can be hard to come by and pricey if you do. It is illegal for farmers to sell raw milk, my friend had to " buy " a share of a cow to get the milk. Honestly though, if she is already 9 months old and doing well on the formula that she has been on, then I would just keep her on it. Formula is only recommended for the first 12 months anyway. There is an organic formula for older babies, I think that it is called Baby's Own or something like that, you could use that to be a little healthier. Or, you could always ask your friend to donate some breastmilk for her, it is the healthiest way to go and wouldn't be much fuss!! Some people are weirded out by it, but I used to donate milk to a friend of mine who was having her own issues with breastfeeding. Good Luck and congratulations!! Guest guest
Do you have any friends that are lactating that would volunteer milk or I've heard that their are 'milk banks' in some areas, but your LLL leader should know about that. I've pumped milk (and nursed their babies at times) for few of my friends (long term in one case) who had different issues with nursing. Just a thought, Good luck and congratulations!!!!!! Guest guest
I've heard that their are 'milk banks' in some areas, Unfortunately, there aren't that many milk banks in this country and you need a prescription for milk from them and it will only be prescribed for babies who can't drink any formula. It is pretty sad, eh? Sara
