Guest guest
Sorry for this post but I think that this group can help me with this problem. My 5th grade daughter thinks that she will have to do a dissection this year in class and she is a vegetarian and won't dissect anything. I've told her that she won't have to but now I need to figure out alternatives - any ideas??? Thank you so much. Patty

Guest guest
Patty, There is a site devoted to just this subject. Check out www.animalearn.org Dr. Andrew Knight specializes in conscientious objection. Also, try PETA, www.pcrm.org, and www.vrg.org. They all have info on handling this situation. Guest guest
The first thing you should do is get in touch with the school. Check with the teacher and the district head of the science dept. Most schools already have programs in place for " alternate " learning for dissection. In New Jersey it became mandatory a few years back after a high school student (with a bit of outside assistance) took the school district to the state Supreme Court to set the precedent. I know it is in other states too. If you don't ask about it though it is not offered as a matter of course, so many people don't realize that the option exists. If your school district doesn't have an adequate program, then you can have them review the PETA and other Anti-Vivisection material for inclusion in the curiculum. Guest guest
In the jr. high I work at, the students who do not do the dissection may write a research paper on the anatomy instead. Perhaps the teacher would find this acceptable?
