Guest guest
Hello all! I've recently joined this list, but this is the first time I've written. I am expecting my first child on May first, and we are trying to find a pediatrician. Although my husband isn't vegan, we've agreed to raise our child vegan because of my beliefs and lifestyle. Does anyone have advice on finding vegetarian/vegan friendly doctors? I do not want to take my child to someone who doesn't accept or understand our choice to raise her vegan. I would also love a doctor who is more holistic, and doesn't seem to be " prescription happy. " If anyone in the Baltimore area has recommendations for specific doctors, please feel free to e-mail me with them. Thank you!!! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Sign up now. http://mailplus. Guest guest
Midwives can usually give you the best recommendations for pediatricians that fit this description. Even if you are not using a midwife, they are generally happy to share information. You can find them in your local yellow pages. ~Marvelyn - " Mandy Rittmeyer " <mmrittmeyer Wednesday, January 22, 2003 1:35 PM Pediatricians > Hello all! Guest guest
My pediatrician, although not holistic, was receptive to veganism/vegetarianism because she is from India -need I say more!! She believes in vaccinating children because of the childhood diseases she witnessed firsthand while in India. Her name is V.J. Subramanian and her number is 301 891-6080. She has an office in Silver Spring, MD. I've taken my child to her from birth (he's 26 months old now.) Fortunately, I haven't needed her for any major problems, but whenever she suggests a treatment that's against my health beliefs, I use my common sense. - " Mandy Rittmeyer " <mmrittmeyer Wednesday, January 22, 2003 2:35 PM Pediatricians > Hello all! Guest guest
7th Day Adventist doctors are usually vegetarian, sometimes vegan, certainly health conscious. --- Be kind. Be of good cheer. Dick Ford
Guest guest
(Lengthy...sorry!) My son just turned eight, and has been vegan since birth. We have lived in New Jersey, Indiana, and Utah (not exactly hot beds of liberalism), have had three different pediatricians, and have never had his diet be an issue. The doctors have found him to be healthy, intelligent, and happy. None of them were ever concerned about his diet - they didn't even seemed fazed. I think they come into contact w/many children w/allergies - can't have dairy products, for instance - so they realize a child can thrive without certain foods. Plus, they realize so few adults put any effort or thought into what they or their children are eating - how can they argue against a diet filled with fresh, healthy foods? My son happily gets his calcium through enriched soy and rice milks (among other things), while some of his friends have sodas at every meal (their fast food " happy " meals) - they are the kids the pediatricians will be concerned about! If you address this confidently and positively with a pediatrician, rather than antagonistically, I'm sure the physician will respect your choices. Best of luck! >>> admartin 01/22/03 05:22PM >>> My pediatrician, although not holistic, was receptive to veganism/vegetarianism because she is from India -need I say more!! Guest guest
I'm on a DC veg list and asked for recommendations; unfortunately, all of them were in MD, too far from Arlington. Perhaps Baltimore has a veg list. I think one of the dr's I got was in Tacoma Park; is that too far? My son is 2 1/2 and I'm on my 4th pediatrician (the 1st retired, hated the second 2, even though one was veg, and so far so good with the 4th-nonveg). It may be horrible to have a pediatrician that does not agree, but I've found the most important things are not to have to wait for an hour or more after your appt time; not having to wait on hold for 15 to get a recorded message; hateful receptionists....... When I couldn't get a referral on a veg pediatrician this last time, I called a practice I had been referred to (but no specific dr). When they ask me what kind of dr I wanted, I said " no old men who are big meat eaters. " She laughed and said she would give me one of the new, young drs. Turns out she's great, used to be veg, gets down in the floor and plays with his trains etc. Therefore, I've decided the burnout factor is a big thing to look for. Guest guest
Tacoma Park might not be too far. It's between DC and Silver Springs. Takoma Park Metro puts you off near Flower Ave, Carrol Ave, and Eastwest Hwy. Part of Tacoma is in DC, the other part is in Montgomery county. Hope this helps. Dr. Jasmine Moghissi. She's a great doctor, and she really takes time to get to know her patients. She also encourages patients to contact her personally by email for advice, which we love. It has saved a visit to the office on countless occassions. She's not a vegetarian, but she's always been supportive of our diet and is very open to learning new things.
