Guest guest
I recently went out on a date with a nice woman who seems open to vegetarianism but is enchanted with the Atkins diet, stating that it has made her feel better and have more energy. Without revealing the moral level of my vegetarianism, I told her that may be so, but it is a short term fix which comes at a great cost, especially since meat protein leaches out calcium from the bones and will exaccerbate osteoporosis. She seems willing able to be informed on health and diet, but has been influenced by the marketing of the slaughter industry and this Atkins diet. Does anyone have any RECENT or UNBIASED critiques of the Atkins diet, which I can forward to her? I would like to influence her positively and lead her to vegetarianism. Thank you, John Atlanta
Guest guest
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which publishes monthly Nutrition Watch magazine, had a critique of it. I don't know, however, if it's on their website or what their website would be (probably www.cspi.org) or how to get back issues. It was maybe 3 months ago. I've seen other criticisms, but I can't recall where. Start looking, you're bound to turn something up. Guest guest
John, I recently put this list together for my in-laws. Hope it's what you're looking for. Bonnie Time Magazine had a huge cover story addressing this topic. They took a look at Ornish (low-fat plant-based diet) vs. Atkins (low-carb high-protein diet). http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101020902/story.html I side with Ornish - the advocate for a low-fat plant-based diet. He is also the guy who has had success in decreasing angina (chest pain) by 91% and cholesterol levels by 40% without medications. The guy who helps people reverse heart disease and avoid bypass surgery or angioplasty through lifestyle changes - including a low-fat, whole foods diet. He says bypass and angioplasty are band-aid fixes for a problem that is bound to recur if the source of the problem (running saturated animal fat through arteries) is not corrected. Oprah had Dr. Ornish as a guest on her show discussing " What to Feed Your Heart " http://www.oprah.com/tows/pastshows/tows_2002/tows_past_20020313.jhtml?promo code=036 WebMD: webmd.com/medcast_channel_toc/3068 American Heart Association: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1586574.stm Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.org/news2000-rst/682.html CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2000/FOOD/news/02/29/oneil.chat/ American Dietetic Association: http://www.eatright.org/nfs/nfs0200b.html About.com- American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: http://nutrition.about.com/library/weekly/aa080899.htm American Institute for Cancer Research http://www.aicr.org/action.lasso?-Database=w005aicr.fp3 & -Response=pubsearchd etail.htm & -DoScript=articletext & -MaxRecords=1 & index=1503 & -Search - Thu, 30 Jan 2003 16:53:13 EST AtlantaGaia Atkins Diet, research revealing truth <snip>Does anyone have any RECENT or UNBIASED critiques of the Atkins diet, which I can forward to her? Guest guest
All I know is that the first two weeks (I think it's 2) are the most rigid and that by consuming almost no carbohydrates the body goes into a state of ketosis. Basically the person on the diet is temporarily altering their metabolism. Doesn't sound like a healthy way of life to me. The things folks will do to avoid good old fashioned exercise, yeeesh! Guest guest
The Center for Science in the Public Interest puts out the Nutrition Action Healthletter. The following link is a particular issue that contains info about the Atkins diet and it's claims. http://www.cspinet.org/nah/11_02/bigfatlies.pdf Melodese AtlantaGaia [AtlantaGaia] Thursday, January 30, 2003 1:53 PM Atkins Diet, research revealing truth I recently went out on a date with a nice woman who seems open to vegetarianism but is enchanted with the Atkins diet, stating that it has made her feel better and have more energy. Guest guest
Actually, he didn't have a heart attack. Apparently, the episode that landed him in the hospital was related to a heart defect that he's lived with all of his life. Of course, I'm not defending the man here, just attempting to set the record straight. Maria --\ -- Greg Burgin <gburgin wrote:Uh, yeah John ... Atkins recently had a heart attack.
