Guest guest
I've just finished reading a book that I think would be a must-read for many of us on this list, despite the fact that it's not specifically about vegetarianism. It's called " Having Faith " by Sandra Steingraber, published by Perseus Publishing. She is a trained ecologist, teaching at the university level in addition to publishing books in her field, who writes in this book about how her personal and professional lives intersected when she became pregnant with her daughter (Faith). She presents a lot of factual information about how the toxins/bacterial contaminants/etc. in our soil and water got there, as well as how they most particularly affect the development of fetuses and nursing babies, in a way that is pleasant, not dry, to read. It is, however, quite frightening to contemplate -- probably not the best light reading while pregnant! Along the way, she mentions that she was a vegetarian except during her pregnancy due to specific food cravings, and she lets the facts speak for themselves about the dangers of eating " higher up on the food chain " (animals and especially fish & seafood). Well written, and full of great info - she keeps a very focused eye trained on her subject. I just wish she'd talked a bit about the whole diaper issue, too (she used cotton, but didn't discuss the whys & wherefores at all on the issue).
