Guest guest
People have asked help from this list regarding multi-vitamins on a regular basis. I know that I did, too, when it was discovered that the pre-natals I'd been using had some sort of hidden animal product in them (still haven't figured out what it is, though!). But I think I'm the only one who has ever mentioned the problem of mega-dosages for specific nutrients. Virtually every multi-vitamin I've been able to find have included hundreds if not thousands of times higher dosage of certain vitamins than is recommended. There seems to be a connection between " health store " or " vegetarian " vitamins and megadoses. I know that the industry standards can be bought with exactly 100% RDA down the list. Well, the latest " Science News " includes a report from the Jan. 23rd " New England Journal of Medicine " stating that a 30 year study has concluded that excess vitamin A causes hip fractures. (The study was only done on men.) All it took was 5,000 I.U. per day for men to increase their tendency for breakage. Virtually all of the multi-vitamins people have recommended on this list contain higher dosages than that (and of course, you also get some from your foods, as well). Does anyone know of a minimal type of (vegetarian, naturally!) multi-vitamin? Just enough to smooth over any missed nutrients (we've all had days/weeks/months like that!) without running into megadoses? Liz
