Guest guest
I want to thank everyone who wrote in response to my question about infant cereals! We are going to delay starting our daughter on solids at present. Thanks for the cookbook suggestions and the receipes, at least we will have a starting point when we are ready to begin. I'm not too worried about burning out in making infant food - I love to cook and the idea that this whole little person is being created by what I put into her is both enormously rewarding and very thought provoking. I also appreciate the info about iron supplementation. I did a little research on this topic myself in the meantime. It appears that if the mom's diet is good and the infant is eating only breast milk (no formula)that iron levels are generally fine in infants without supplementation for at least the first 9 months to year or longer. I think the concern here is that if you have an anemic woman (which is unfortunately not that uncommon, even in the 'developed' world) or one who is feeding a significant amount of non-fortified formula as well as breast milk to the infant it is possible that the infant will be slightly anemic. The result of anemia in infancy is profound and long term so I think that the medical establishment tends to push iron supplementation without regard for the specifics of the mother/infant situation. Luckily at this point I don't feel I need to worry about my daughter's iron levels based on our situation. Thanks all!
Guest guest
I'm not too worried about burning out in making infant food - It isn't hard at all! My three year old never had jarred food ever, he only had the homemade food that I made. The easiest things were bananas and avocadoes, they were easy to transport and you can just mush them up with a fork. Sara

I, for one, am relieved. :-D It's hard to wait, but so nice to know your baby will grow stronger with breastmilk until then! ~Doh -------- " If you're going through Hell, keep going.
