Guest guest
> I took the salmon omega 3's for depression after talking to a psychiatrist, the health food store employees and this list, and found that I experienced relief in 1-2 weeks. Everyone said that the vegetarian ones simply weren't as effective and given that it was a choice of salmon or lithium, it seemed like the better choice. > > Sandra As I understand it, there are 3 types of omega-3 fatty acids, one found primarily in plant foods. When consumed, the body converts it into the two other kinds that are found in fish. It's not necessary to supplement your diet with animal products as a vegetarian, but of course, your situation may be different, suffering from depression. I don't know anything about that, and I'm glad to hear you found some relief! I just want to allay whatever concerns the average person might have about the adequacy of flax seed oil (and walnuts, etc,) for meeting your omega-3 needs. Here is an excellent article on the topic from VRG: American Heart Association Calls for Eating Fish Twice Per Week - What’s a Vegetarian To Do? http://www.vrg.org/journal/vj2001sep/2001sepomega3.htm Melanie Wilson Vegetarian Baby & Child Magazine www.vegetarianbaby.com <http://www.vegetarianbaby.com> Vegetarianteen.com online magazine www.vegetarianteen.com

I was really surprised when some people on this list here told me that the flax seeds might not do the trick, so I just went ahead and took them. I take some comfort in using a brand of salmon oil that only uses salmon that's leftovers from the slaughtering process, rather than hunting for them, so at least I'm not contributing to the salmon's death quite so much... > I just want to allay whatever > concerns the average person might have about the adequacy of flax seed oil > (and walnuts, etc,) for meeting your omega-3 needs. Oh, absolutely. I think that for most people, vegetarian diets are definitely quite sufficient and adequate. For me? Well, I was too depressed to think clearly enough to know... and now I'm not.... so who knows? Sandra
