Guest guest
I am new to the group. My daughter just turned one, and my dh and I are raising her vegetarian. He is not, but supportive of my feelings. Her pediatrian took her blood and found her iron level low, Now she is on supplements. We have her retested this week. I've added some iron rich foods, but I feel the " judgement " by the nurse. Whose to say, most babies don't even like red meat!! Has anyone dealt with this? Thanks, Karyn bkwildcray [bkwildcray] Thursday, March 13, 2003 6:10 PM Re: Vegan Couple Set For Trial I dont know this couple or the results of their trial. but I am annoyed with them being described as vegan (vegan is a philosophy of being compassionate and humane in all areas of life not a diet although the eating is about being humane to all sentient beings) They sound like they are strict about what they eat. A form of strict vegatarianism but not vegan. Breastmilk or formula is a compassionate food for babies and cod liver oil is a fish ingredient and not compassionate to the will to live of sea creatures. So I don't believe the diet is about being compassionate to fish or babies as much as it is about doing what the parents might think is the best thing for the baby even if they were misguided. I know this is a side but it is upsetting to me to see a misrepresention of those who practice the philosophy of veganism. Guest guest
My son also was low on iron. We gave him a natural vegan source of iron, and within a month, he was up to the level he should be. He is 12 now and no problems with low iron. You can e-mail me privately if you want the vegan supplement name. Good luck, Tracy

Guest guest
Many babies are found iron-deficient; that's why iron-fortified formula takes up half the formula shelves. They test many babies (or used to) not just vegetarian babies. My 15yo daughter was iron deficient for a short time as an infant and we were definitely not vegetarian at the time. There is not necessarily a cause and effect between the vegetarianism and the low iron. So take heart, add the iron rich foods as you planned and a supplement if you need to, and just let the nurse think what she will. She probably just knows the nutrition she learned in nursing school. As a homeschooling, home, vegetarian mom of three, I often find myself nodding, thanking people for their thoughtful advise, and then doing what I think is best. You're doing great :-) ~Marvelyn > I am new to the group. My daughter just turned one, and my dh and I are > raising her vegetarian. He is not, but supportive of my feelings.
