Guest guest
Hello All. It's been too long since I've last posted. (!) I was wondering if anyone has any favorite children's books that are geared towards the veggie lifestyle? I have a 16 month old and 5 year old - both vegan. My 5 year old is in preschool and becoming more aware at what makes us all the same and different. Well, being the only veg-kid in the class, his differences come up often. every celebration, visits to farms, etc. Needless to say he's starting to ask more questions, and I'd love to start a book collection for him. I'm also interested in books for parents of veg-kids. (and vegan cookbooks are Always welcome!) Also, when your child asks why their friends don't care about the animals or how relatives don't know better than to eat or not get upset by the mistreatment of animals, how do you respond?? Thanks for you time. Take care. ~gv
Guest guest
I was thinking about the same thing. I have a three year old. He doesn't know yet that we eat differently, but he has seen a few McDonald's commercials. At first, he thought that Ronald was neat, then I explained to him that he was mean because he hurt cows, he doesn't watch that much tv, but when those commercials come on he now starts yelling " MEAN guy, he hurts cows! " At first I thought that was really cool, but now I am worried, I don't want him to think that our family members are all mean. Guest guest
There is a list on the VRG website (link below) of childrens books with vegetarian and animal rights themes. Its great because it gives age recomendations for each book. I havent read any of them yet but I just reserved three of them from the library for my 2 year old. I planned to periodically get more from the library and then keep track of which ones I really like and then eventually purchase those ones. http://www.vrg.org/journal/vj97may/976vbook.htm Rachael , " joplingv " <joplingv@e...> wrote: > Hello All. > > > I was wondering if anyone has any favorite children's books that are > geared towards the veggie lifestyle? Guest guest
Victor's Picnic with the Vegetarian Animals, see http://www.vegfamily.com/book-reviews/victors-picnic.htm and Victor the Vegetarian: stories about a boy who saves some lambs and decides to become vegetarian Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon by Jules Bass This one was a bit scary for my 4yo, the dragons (except Herb) keep trying to eat people, and the people keep trying to behead the dragons. Herb unites everyone in the end. There's also a companion cookbook called Cooking with Herb FOUL PLAY, DESDEMONA by Beverly Keller (1989) A Thanksgiving story about kid activists trying to prevent killing of turkeys. Seems to be addressing 8-16 yr old kids. Leprechan Cake & Other Tales: stories about vegetarian kids, along with recipes The Chicken Gave it to Me: how farm chickens are treated Noah's Ark: Noah is appalled to see the way animals are treated today and teached a lesson -- not biblical or religious Nana's Adoption Farm: a book about a farm animal sanctuary The Benefactory: a story of a pig's coming to a sanctuary Much Ado About Aldo, and Aldo Ice Cream: stories about a boy who becomes vegetarian Save the Animals! 101 Easy Things You Can Do: activist activities for kids age 6 years and up * Hetty & Harriet: 2 free-range chickens discuss the horrors of factory farming Gnats of Knotty Pine: discusses hunting Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving: some kids help to save turkeys from becoming Thanksgiving dinner! Crocodile Smile: book and tape of songs from animals' viewpoints. example: crocodile sings " I am not a Hat " Hunter and His Dog: Boy learns animal compassion with the help of his dog A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve Bunting. Mr. Turkey thinks that it will be a " traditional " Thanksgiving, until his friend Mr. Moose invited him TO dinner, not FOR dinner. It's full of cute animals images and has a special friendship based message for us all. Not preachy at all. 'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE THANKSGIVING (to the rhythm of the original; kids take a field trip to a turkey farm, realize what's really going on, and smuggle the turkeys out) SPIDER DAN (rhyming book, about a spider who can't bring himself to eat the insects who get caught in his web and is ultimately spared by a frog himself) - <I was wondering if anyone has any favorite children's books>
