Guest guest
I would appreciate any advice on getting more calcium into my almost 4-year-old daughter. She is vegetarian, not vegan. She will not drink milk, cow or soy. She will not eat any form of yogurt, although I do sneak it into popsicles (soy yogurt and orange juice). Although she would eat pudding until it came out of her ears, I don't want her to eat a lot of that because of the sugar. I did buy soy chocolate pudding, and sent it to daycare with her, but she refused to eat it (she did not know it was soy). I know broccoli has calcium, but she will only eat it with garlic sauce from a local Chinese carry-out. She does drink OJ fortified with calcium - usually 2 glasses per day, but I also don't want to give her a ton of juice. She will eat cheese, but again, I don't want to overdo that. I've talked to her about needing calcium to grow bigger, because she is always saying that she can't wait to be big. It's not working, however. Maybe she is getting enough and I don't realize it. Any thoughts would be appreciated, however. Thanks. Karen
Guest guest
Don't forget, animal products leach our systems of calcium! So, by not eating them, you are keeping more calcium in your system. Also, according to John Robbins, it's about bio-availabilty. The seeds, nuts, greens, soy, etc....have higher calcium absorption rates than any animal product. We love adding almonds and sesame seed to many of our foods. Also, kale, collard, spinach and other dark leafy greens are great sources. Don't forget the tofu!! Some soy yogurts are calcium fortified as well! Guest guest
as a parent, I would suggest that your daughter is controlling too much of her " wants " for her age. Something is wrong when a child is not eating pretty much what the parent eats. Are you rewarding her for her dictates? Do you give in to her demands? If either is Yes, then the problem is holistic, and not the food. Guest guest
Does she like nuts at all? My 2 yr old loves almonds & I know that they have some calcium. You could also give her a multi vitamin. My kids love Yummi Bears vegetarian vitamins. They look like gummy bears.

From the beginning my older son ate just about anything put in front of him, and from the beginning my younger son has been the opposite... Luckily I am not too stressed about it as I don't view it as a " control " issue. I offer healthy food choices and we go from there. It is amazing to me though that my younger son can be happy living off of pb & j sandwiches, yogurt, pretzels, bananas, strawberries and raisins;-) Carmen near Zurich

Guest guest
Hi, I just have a question before I try this again. I had tried to make sesame milk which looked delicious but when I tasted it it was so bitter I didn't bother to give it to the little one. This was before I sweetened it. Does your milk taste bitter at all? My two year old is picky. Thanx... - Namaska7 Friday, April 18, 2003 12:16 AM Re: Calcium If you want to give your child the highest form of calcium make sesame milk. use hulled sesame seeds, water & maple syrup Blend in a blender strain and serve Lynda
Guest guest
Linda, I heard that sesame seeds are about the highest form of plant calcium. Many make sesame seed milk by blending in blender with water. Also the body absorbs more calcium when one isn't eating animal protein.
