If it hasn't concerned you before, I wouldn't start worrying about it now. A blood test (hemoglobin) checks the blood-iron level. It's not an entirely accurate picture of the body's true iron profile, but it's a starting point. So they prick your child's finger, squeeze it (which some people say alters the test results), and then test the blood drawn. Side effects to iron in vitamins? Well, if it also has calcium, the calcium will block the absorption of the iron. Too much iron (if a child decides (s)he likes the vitamin and swallows a whole bunch) will kill a child.
