Guest guest Posted February 16, 2000 Report Share Posted February 16, 2000 Posted by: Carla * Exported from MasterCook * Baked Sweet Onions Recipe By :Southern Living® 1991 Annual Recipes Serving Size : 8 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Casseroles Onions Side Dish Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 4 pounds large sweet onions 1/4 cup butter or margarine -- melted 1 10 3/4-ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup -- undiluted 1 cup half-and-half 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 8 3/4-inch-thick slices French bread 3 tablespoons butter or margarine -- melted Slice onions; cut each slice in half. Saute onion in 1/4 cup butter in a Dutch oven until crisp-tender; spoon into a lightly greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish. Set aside. Combine soup, half-and-half, salt, and pepper; pour mixture over onion. Sprinkle cheese evenly over sauce; arrange bread slices on top, and brush with 3 tablespoons melted butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until golden brown.
