Outside the Scriptures

By Dr. T. N. Krishnaswami

A special transmission outside the scriptures;

No dependence upon words or letters;

Direct pointing at the heart of man;

Seeing into one's own nature, and the attainment of Liberation.

These are the reflections of a traveler on the Mountain Path laid down by

the Maharshi. The Maharshi's wordless doctrine is unlike the usual

traditional teachings. There are no creeds to be elaborated, so there is no

need for preaching. There is nothing for the mind to theorise or

philosophise about. What is needed is immediate, intuitive understanding of

the heart. " The intricate maze of philosophy of the various schools is said

to clarify matters and to reveal the Truth, but in fact it creates confusion

where none need exist. To understand anything there must be the Self. The

Self is obvious. So why not remain as the Self? What need to explain the

non-self? " *

This quote is actually by Bodhidharma who preceded Ramana Maharshi by

many centuries.

Harsha,

Thank you for this post and the one before it on What is Our Sadhana.

As usual you have found the heart. If these two passages were

thoroughly understood there would be many more enlightened beings

living here and now.

In looking within there is a focus on " self " realization. This

neglects the world and its appearance and so often leads to a kind of

non-action which attempts to leave the world behind. This is the

criticism of the Theravada by Mahayana Buddhists.

A teacher (I have forgotten who) taught me about this issue:

This world is a dream, your dream. Is your dream world a nightmare

problem or divine solution?

Well, here you are having this dream. Are you dreaming the best dream

you can?

If you don't like it -- change your dream!

Dear Friends in Ramana, Looking within leads to a kind of non action. It is true. Is that the way it has to be? Kindly explain.RegardsSelfJohn Logan <johnrloganis wrote: Harsha, Thank you for this post and the one before it on What is Our Sadhana. As usual you have found the heart. If these
