Hi everyone! Veggie Val here. Welcome to all the newcomers. It's so cool to see

such a global presence.

BTW, BTW is e-shorthand for " by the way. "

FWIW, IMHO (in my humble opinion), Smart Dogs by SmartFoods are the best veggie

hot dogs available. I also love Italian Links by SmartFoods, smothered in

sauteed green peppers and onions, a la Fenway Pa-ahk (the venerable RedSox

baseball stadium in Boston). My 6 yr.old ds loves the Italian links when I saute

them, slice them at an angle, and substitute them for sausage in pasta dishes.

And..BTW, we adore Morningstar Farms breakfast links. I saute them with just a

couple drops of olive oil. They can also be microwaved. We can't keep enough of

them in the freezer. I'm not fond of the Boca brand veggie sausage links...they

seem dried out to me. Is there an ideal way to cook them?

Laura, good luck in Paris with vegetarian food. I had a disappointing culinary

experience there last July. It helps if you can read French on the menus. I just

looked for " vegetarienne " and ended up with very few choices during the week

(and I eat cheese, which helps): unimpressive pizza; the ubuquitous crusty

french bread with a slice of some kind of cheese (Chevre, Camembert, Brie,

Gruyere, Swiss, or Havarti) slapped on it; and crepes--pomme de terre is apple,

and the chocolat crepes were my choice for lunch one day. (Bad Val :)) I didn't

eat much. The French aren't known for their vegetarian dishes. More than once

when I asked for a vegetarian option, the waitstaff suggested seafood, which is

a specialty along the coast, of course (I was in Brittany). But ah, the

croissants and jam!!!

Veggie Val

ran into a woman at the hfs (I'm finally getting a hang of these

abbreviations-although I don't know what FWIW or ds means...:) who said she was

a vegan from birth. she was asking me my opinion on which veggie dogs are the

best-which I think all of them suck except for the Boca sausages which are

ridiculously good but at my last inspection-which was over a year ago-they

conatined red 40. But anyway-sorry to get off track- I mentioned that none of

them really came close when it came to the real taste of hot dogs but were a

decent substitute.

Also, re: boca anythings -- when Kraft bought the boca brand, they started

using bio-engineered everything... we started using Morningstar instead.

Thanks for your experiences, Val. A French member of one of the other

groups sent me a list of veggie/vegan restaraunts, so hopefully I

will have a better experience. So, what's wrong with chocolate crepes

for lunch (or breakfast for that matter!!)? Sounds good to me. I

haven't found any hot dogs that I really like yet. I thought the

smart dogs were good at first, but they just seem so rubbery. I

haven't come across Boca brand yet, but I get the burgers from time

to time. I just mixed up some seitan today for the first time. Looks

interesting, I plan to use it somehow tomorrow. It's been great

hooking up with like-minded people. Knowing that there are so many

people who have chosen this road is very encouraging, especially when

you hear " I've been Vegan for 18 years " .

Peace,

Laura

I can't do the hot dogs as they taste too much like the real thing for

me...but that's probably a good thing for some people. I do love their

veggie links sausages. And, slightly off topic, all the Whole Foods talk had

me check out the one closest to me. It turned out to be their one year

anniversary and they were serving hot dogs-Yves, with organic kethup on ww

buns. It was so truly, truly nice not to have to say no to my son. :)

LOL! I thought I was nuts - I can't stand any veggie dogs or veggie burgers

that have the texture of meat.... my husband likes the Smartdogs drowned in

sauerkraut

I get my daily dose of blueberries in a fruit shake made from blueberries,

mangos, rice milk, and powdered rice protein. Trader Joe's has frozen

organic blueberries at a very reasonable price!
