Guest guest
Hi everyone, Alka, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying thanks for sharing your experience. And yes, when you have time, please do share the portions of the presentations that you felt most interesting! It sounds like a wonderful event. I haven't had a chance to look at all the photos but I've heard that an adorable member of is featured :-) Cindy & others who responded privately about a veggie pin: I'm glad you agree! Will keep y'all posted on that - I have always wondered (and this is only my own biased viewpoint in thinking that the SF Bay Area is one of the best and most diverse places to live) why we don't have a multi-day conference of the likes of vegsource/WorldFest and all the other wonderful multi-day conferences that exist elsewhere. I think the first one I went to was actually an AR conference at SFSU organized by the student group there. That was over 10 years ago! That was the first time I heard Dr. Barnard speak, and I remember some young women giggling near me, they thought he was very cute. One of the first organized events I went to was actually a PETA " AR 101 " conference. It was very informative but one of the things I liked the best, actually, was that they organized the seating by zip code so I met other veggy folks in my area. (We wouldn't need zip code seating if we had veggie pins....!) First, thanks and congratulations to Tammy & Chris for initiating this wonderful veggie online community. In addition to our legendary love of eating, vegheads also love to talk, so it's always enriching (and not divisive!) to have more discussion groups over which we can exchange ideas with other carrot-munchers. Thank you, Tammy, for alerting us to the photos of the vegsource/Worldfest event in LA. There were several folks from the Bay Area who made the trip down to LA for the extravaganza, and I was among them. It was a tough decision to opt to go down to LA on the same weekend that the stellar World Vegetarian Day event was being held up here in SF, but a combination of factors -- the 2-day conference, the opportunity to table for PeTA, and some personal considerations -- cinched the deal, and I decided to go. The conference was FABULOUS. Each speaker was given sixty to ninety minutes to speak (and T. Colin Campbell spoke for 2 hours!); although I had seen most of the speakers before, the longer format was really useful in enabling the speakers to dive deeper into their areas of expertise. I actually have some notes kicking around here from the conference; if people are interested, I would happily post some of the really interesting portions. The slate of speakers included John McDougall, T. Colin Campbell, Howard Lyman, Robert Cohen, and John Robbins. All inspiring, interesting, brilliant, and enjoyable. I spent Worldfest tabling for PeTA. Consequently, I missed the main-stage-events entirely, but I did have very engaging discussions with endless streams of veteran activists, PeTA supporters, people entirely new to the movement, and others who had just stumbled into the park and wanted to know what was going on. It really was among the best tabling I've ever done in my life, with very little down time, and just hordes of people wanting information. It took a while to recover! With its Hollywood celebrities and veggie movers-and-shakers, Worldfest would certainly be a great place to take friends and family members whom you're trying to convert. The event combined the positive energy of an upbeat event with a lot of great information. Win-win! I would certainly think of going again next year, although I would be very tempted to run around to all of the cooking demos and talks, while letting someone else distribute literature. :-) Cheers, Alka > > Tammy [meowthunk] > Tuesday, October 09, 2001 8:13 AM > > VegSource Sept 2001 LA event photos > > > Here's the URL: > http://www.vegsource.com/event/photos.htm > > Looks like they had lots of fun!
