Guest guest
Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy presents: Dr. Ray Greek Author of Sacred Cows and Golden Geese: The Human Cost of Experiments on Animals Lecture Topic: THE TRUTH BEHIND ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION Dr. Greek will discuss alternatives to animal experimentation. Tuesday, November 6, 7 PM 100 Genetics & Plant Biology Building [Map Location: http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/BC23.html] UC, Berkeley *Admission is free. Ray Greek, M.D., is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He served his residency at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He has taught anesthesiology there and at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Currently, Ray serves as President of Americans For Medical Advancement (AFMA), a non-profit organization co-founded with his wife, Jean Swingle Greek, that dedicates itself to educating the public about the hazards of applying the results of animal testing to humans. He is also the Scientific Advisor for the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS). Sacred Cows and Golden Geese: The Human Cost of Experiments on Animals was, in essence, sparked by a family squabble. Jean Swingle Greek, just beginning her clinical rotations at the University of Wisconsin at Madison veterinary school, would often come home with questions about how to treat certain cases. Her husband, Ray Greek, who was at the time teaching medicine at the University, would reply with the correct answer as it applied to humans. But, in almost all cases, what cured a human didn’t work the animals, and vice-versa. This led the Drs. Greek to spend a decade studying comparative anatomy and physiology, reviewing treatment notes, and perusing scientific literature as well as medical history books. Jean’s expertise in animal anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, combined with Ray’s expertise in the same for humans, allowed this husband/wife team to examine the similarities and differences between the species with greater depth. Their work resulted in Sacred Cows and Golden Geese, a book that focuses on the science of this hotly debated topic.
