Hi everyone,

I thought Billy's letter to the editor a timely topic as we approach the

holidays, one that I thought I would share it with all of you (with Billy's

permission). Billy is a SFBAVEG member and author of a book on

vegetarianism.

I am always interested to learn how people make their vegan dietary

requirements known to others, be it a restaurant, special business dinner,

new dating partner, etc., so if anyone would like to share information, I'm

all ears! I met someone recently who has an awesome track record at helping

dating partners evolve to veganism -- I think the total is 4!

trashing vegans

Re: " Manners Matter: Politesse makes for happy party-goers and -throwers, so

RSVP already " by Jane Meredith Adams, San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday,

It's not only civil but also smart for anyone who has food requirements that

differ from mainstream cuisine or a host's way of eating to make their needs

known in advance. That's true for diabetics, Muslims, people with

allergies,...and vegans.

Yet Ms. Adams tars all vegans with her caustic brush when she lashes out

against " rude guests who don't RSVP, strangers who arrive uninvited, and

vegans. " Substitute " Muslims " or " diabetics " for " vegans " and the bigotry

becomes apparent.

She also quotes someone about a vegan guest who didn't announce her

requirements until mealtime: " That probably was not the time for her to

explain her dietary problems. "

I sympathize with the host, but as someone who grew up hunting and chopping

off chickens' heads, I tire of people calling my veganism a dietary

" problem, " " preference, " or even " restriction. " It's a choice, a principled

commitment, not to ingest the products of animal suffering.
