Guest guest
http://www.do-it-herself.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=1 & forum=1 & 5 The Do-It-Herself Collective presents our Alternative Winter Creations Skillshare Sunday, December 9 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CELL Space (2050 Bryant Street, San Francisco). The event is open to all genders, all ages, and all income brackets (donation suggested but not required) The holidays ... 'tis the season for overconsumption and forced gift giving. This year, why not bypass the consumer madness and give handmade gifts from recycled and reused materials. 10,000 people will buy the same shirt you eyed at the gap; only one person will get that special gift you made yourself! The event is designed to be an alternative to holiday shopping. People buy so much stuff that ends up in landfills ...we thought we'd teach people how to make stuff at least partly from recycled materials! All workshops are taught by women. Unlike the two-hour workshops of the September 14-16 Skillshare Conference, this event offers 7 different workstations which will be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We'll provide you with space, materials, and workstation guides who can teach, advise, and problem-solve with you. BYOC, though. (Bring Your Own Creativity!) The guides will be instructing and assisting throughout the day, but you'll be able to move from station to station as you please. The workstations: soap making sewing (glad rags and whatnot) herbal gifts from the garden screen printing candle making rubber gifts and sex toys calendar making/bookbinding and journal making If you can donate any supplies to the skillshare, please let us know! Almost anything can be useful, but we are especially in need of: jars or containers to hold lip balm (if you're planning to make herbal gifts from the garden, you might want to bring one), old t-shirts (screenprinting! bring jackets, bags, paper, undies!), candle wax (bits and stubs of old candles), cans or other cylindrical objects for candle molds, decorations for crafts (old jewelry, tacks, photos), old magazines and interesting papers (to decorate the glass around your lovely candles), fun fabrics for sewing, and old rubber from bike or bus inner-tubes (to turn into sex toys or accessories!) This fabulous skillshare event will be sliding scale $0 - a million, BUT the more stuff you can bring to share, the better! If you're interested in attending and haven't yet registered, please let us know so we can make sure we have enough supplies on hand (although it's okay to show up the day of the event, too!). The e-mail for the event is info. The Web site is http://www.do-it-herself.org. Don't forget to tell all your friends! The Do-It-Herself Collective -- Ms Jen Wu, will be teaching candle making the majority of the people here will be young hippie/punk type folks. They are nice people, don't be surprised if some of them are vegans from Foods not Bombs people. I won't be able to attend. Only events like happens in cool SF! ===== -------- Pork ain't white meat. The Pork Industry thinks we're dumb enough to believe them. American Cheese ain't cheese, it's gross oil and junk. (not made from 100% real milk) It also gives the AMERICANS a bad name representing " trash food " . There are alternatives to our SMELLY cars. Once a month or more, give public transportation a chance. If more people use public transportation, the train/bus will run frequently. If not, the results are smoggy brown skis and heavy traffic jams. (hey, it's already happening for years) Send your FREE holiday greetings online! http://greetings. Guest guest
I'm one of the ones organizing this event ... It's actually not a Christmas event; we're not religiously affiliated (pathologically so). Rainbow Grocery donated a few pounds of beeswax, hence my question about the AR perspective on beeswax (we had a discussion about this at our last meeting but in the end we all realized we didn't know a whole lot about it). The wax has already been given to us, so we'll use it, but the rest of the wax is parafin, recycled, or, if I can find some, veg. based wax (which tends to be a lot more expensive, so I don't know). By the way, most of the Do-It-Herself organizers are vegan or vegetarian! In fact, we're getting together Sat. night to bake vegan cookies for the skillshare the next day. Also, all genders and all ages are invited. The Do-It-Herself name only means that the organizers and teachers are women; it's not meant to exclude anyone from coming to the skillshare. Hope to see some of you on Sunday!
