Guest guest
Then, I got this email from someone who has other conserns too, she wrote: We all need good deals for holiday shopping, but the Gap (who also owns old navy and banana republic) has a pretty ugly history of environmental abuses. so check out gapsucks.org, or hit the patagonia outlet or global exchange instead (celebrating consumerism with sweatshop labor and the destruction of the environment isnt my idea of the holiday spirit). sorry for the political bit, i hope everyone is getting out of town (and into the mountains) for the holidays. - ===== ===== In, September 2001, I took part in the World's Largest Garbage Collection, during the CA Coastal Cleanup day. Statewide, more than 35,000 cleanup volunteers also got in the Guinness Book of World Records. Want to join me in the year 2002 and break a NEW world record? Maybe I can get us a free t-shirt too. Guest guest
Heya! Thanks for the info! I've heard a lot of rumours that Banana Republic was carrying real fur trim, but I haven't been able to confirm it yet. Everything I've seen of theirs is faux, and their staff and managers of individual stores swear up & down that they don't carry real fur. However, USA Today mentioned their name in a pro-fur article along with notorious fur-sellers like NM, Saks, and Express. I have been able to confirm that they do sell shearling, which is a type of fur. Anyhow, probably the most important reason to avoid shopping at Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy, is, as you said, because of their impact on the environment. These three stores are all owned by Pacific Lumber, which has been in the business of destroying California old growth forests. The Guardian ran an article last week on places you can shop in the city (largely in the Mission) that support local artists, so you don't feel like you have to give in to holiday pressure and buy from corporations like these -- I'm gonna try to check some of them out later today, actually. - Carla Brauer karrotqueen " You must be the change you want to see in the world.
