Hi all,

#1) Just heard that the Now & Zen UnTurkey has been spotted at the TJs " in

s.f., in the complex with toys r us, bed bath and beyond, and so on, on

harrison or something like that, not far from rainbow. " Has anyone else

seen any??

#2) Pete's note about supporting animal charities is so true and so timely!

Earlier this month I received a letter from Neal Barnard of PCRM. I would

like to share part of what he wrote:

" Not long after the horrifying events of September 11, there was a news

article in a prominent East Coast paper discussing how what they termed

" marginal " causes, such as animal rights and environmental concerns, would

go by the wayside which, in their opinion, is where they belonged. It said

that nonprofits that did anything other than work for human disaster relief

or welfare issues, should be put out of business. This attitude, coupled

with the current difficulty in getting press attention for our issues, not

to mention the difficulties of sending and receiving mail, has made us

concerned for the future of organizations that are working on the toughest

issues we face. "

See the link in the bookmarks section about Humane Charities (which ones do

& don't fund animal experimentation)

3) Animal People newspaper has their annual watchdog list of the animal

groups, how much direct mail/fundraising they do, how much spent on

programs, etc.

4) Received information about carpooling from another member (thank you!!)

as to how Sierra Club does it - " We encourage use of carpools, but because

of insurance restrictions activity leaders cannot arrange them for you. On

overnight trips, find out who is going & make your own arrangements,

including how much passengers will pay driver for ride; we recommend drivers

& passengers agree upon rate before trip, & that drivers be paid upon

arrival at the destination. You will normally ride back with the same

driver. If you decide for some reason not to ride back with the same driver,

pay driver full round trip amount. Your driver was counting on your share

for the full round trip. We recommend the rate of compensation of 0.25/mi

divided by the total people in the car. This rate includes not only gas, but

wear & tear on the car, which is only fair. Remember, your driver has put

their vehicle at risk, especially under winter driving conditions, to give

you a ride. This rate may vary, depending upon the efficiency of the

vehicle. "
