VEGANS CAN PARTY, TOO

Re: " Manners Matter: Politesse makes for happy party-goers and -throwers, so

RSVP already " by Jane Meredith Adams (Magazine, Nov. 18, 2001).

As a vegan, I am disturbed and offended by Ms. Adams' portrayal of vegans as

rude party poopers with " dietary problems. " I don’t view my veganism as a

problem at all; rather, it is a wonderful solution. Veganism is an extremely

healthy diet, one in which heart attacks are almost unheard of; rates of

breast, colon and prostate cancers are far reduced; and where chances of

diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis, and obesity are close to nil -- an

unparalleled solution to our country's biggest health problems. Veganism also

does not contribute to the incredible enviornmental destruction associated

with raising billions of animals for food nor does it contribute to the

horrendous suffering endured by 9 billion animals each year in the United

States alone.

In my opinion, it is meat eaters, whose diet is bad for their health, bad for

the environment, and torturous for animals, who have " dietary problems. "

It's not only civil but also smart for anyone who has food requirements that

differ from mainstream cuisine or a host's way of eating to make their needs

known in advance. That's true for diabetics, Muslims, people with allergies

and vegans.

Yet Ms. Adams tars all vegans with her caustic brush when she lashes out

against " rude guests who don't RSVP, strangers who arrive uninvited, and

vegans. " Substitute " Muslims " or " diabetics " for " vegans " and the bigotry

becomes apparent.

I tire of people calling my veganism a dietary " problem, " " preference, " or

even " restriction. " It's a choice, a principled commitment, not to ingest the

products of animal suffering.
