Guest guest
Dear SF BA Veg members, I've met so many people who want to try vegetarianism but are intimidated or think it's out of their reach. Or they're not informed of the reasons they might go veg*n. I remember a time when I didn't think I'd get enough protein on a vegan diet! I'm working on a project that I'm convinced will encourage non-vegetarians to try it out... even for seven days... My passion for animals and veganism inspired me to create a " Vegathon. " It's a community project that I'm working on in conjunction with a 3 month workshop at Landmark Education. The Vegathon will happen on a 7-day period from March 4 - 10. Participants in the Vegathon will be non-vegetarians who will not eat meat for one week. Like a marathon, participants will get sponsors to contribute money - a designated amount of money for every day they are in the Vegathon. The money raised will go directly to the SPCA. Why the SPCA? The Vegathon's intention is to make a connection for participants between the animals they are raising money for (cats and dogs) and the animals they aren't eating for a week (cows, pigs, chickens, fish, etc.). I intend to raise $14,000 for the SPCA, but my main interest is raising awareness of the suffering of animals killed for food, the effect of meat production on our environment and the health benefits of a veg*n diet. On the seventh day we'll have a dinner in San Francisco in celebration of the participants' accomplishment of seven days without meat. The evening will feature guest speakers and discussions on the beauty of animals, our health and the planet. I can't do it all alone, so I'm soliciting your help. This project involves: - encouraging non-vegetarians to participate in the Vegathon - distributing support materials to participants - coaching participants (those who are interested in getting support, verbal or written, during their 7 meatless days) I'm looking for a core team of 10 people to encourage non-vegetarians to participate in the Vegathon, and to coach participants if necessary. If you know people who are veg-curious, this is an opportunity to encourage them to try it for a week while supporting the SPCA! In some cases, their interest in raising money for cats and dogs will pique their interest! Most people I've talked to say that they've always wanted an excuse to try vegetarianism, but they've just never had a motivation like this. Please email me at caity if you are interested in being part of this project. I would like to have our initial brainstorming get-together on Saturday, January 19 at my home in San Francisco. I so look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, ~Caity
Guest guest
What a great idea! It is also very near the annual date for Great American Meatout (I think March 20th). If there are out outreach activities like this planned for the month of March, maybe they can be promoted together. Have any of your ever pronounced the name of this group and heard what it says?
