Any suggestions for vegan cheese?

I've been trying various brands of vegan cheese and they seem to be somewhat

lacking. Veggie Kaas seems to turn into a liquid when heated; Vegan Rella

doesn't seem to really melt; Soy Mage kind of melts but isn't quite what I'm

looking for. Any other suggestions?

I know that Extreme Pizza is said to have had vegan cheese that melted --

does anyone know what they used to use before they stopped serving vegan

pizzas?

Hi Jen, I used to be allergic to any and all traces of dairy so I got to

know the vegan products pretty well. Unfortunately, the few vegan cheeses

that were good (not only do most not melt but they taste awful, IMHO) have

slowly been taken off the market.

It seems that most consumers of " non-dairy " cheese don't really care if

it's non-dairy. They just want to satisfy the health myths. So people who

really must have non-dairy for allergy, religious, or moral reasons have

very few choices. But you know all that.

I had the best luck finding true vegan cheese and other products in Jewish

kosher markets. I lived in Boston at the time and there just aren't a lot

of good Jewish foods out here (there's a lot of " Jewish style " foods but

that's not the same thing). I found the brands I got there were more

likely to be formulated for taste and usability and there were more

choices.

I don't know how up to date it is but here's a listing of Bay Area kosher

foods. http://JewishSF.Com/resource/chap15.html In case you or others

don't know...the term " parve " refers to foods that are kosher and

non-dairy/non-meat, but it does include eggs and fish so read the labels

carefully. If a product is certified kosher parve you can be certain there

is no dairy whatsoever either in the product or processed with the same

equipment.

Another solution to consider is making your own. It's not too hard, though

it takes a couple tries to get the technique down. Note that agar agar

flakes and agar agar powder are *not* interchangable. Here's one recipe I

have on my website (it comes from a book).

http://www.consultclarity.com/recipes/vcheese.html

And here's a review of said cookbook and a similar one.

There is a vegan cheese that melts which is available online at:

http://www.imearthkind.com/Vegan%20Cheese.htm

I haven't tried it, so I can't give any personal testimonials.

Since they stopped? I just Saturday had an ostensibly vegan pizza at the one in

Berkeley, with their black bean/salsa sauce (their tomato sauce has dairy) and

soy cheese (which they've told me is really vegan). Next time I'm there, I'll

ask what brand of soy cheese they use.
