Is honey the only sweetener for those who care for all life?

I recently wrote to Roxanne's raw food restaurant in Larkspur to ask if the

food was completely vegan. The answer I received from Michael Klein, one of

the owners, informed me that they would be pleased to accommodate my vegan

diet. The response also said the following about honey:

" We serve honey. All of our honey is harvested from hives where the bees

collect only organic pollen. No bees are killed in the harvesting and only

surplus honey is taken from the hive. The bees are never fed sugar water or

any supplements. Our planet is approaching a crisis because of the decline

of pollinators. Bees provide an invaluable eco-service promoting a richer

ecosystem. Any sweetener sourced from any commercial farm (cane, beets,

dates) causes the destruction of it's entire ecosystem, with the resulting

massive loss of life of virtually everything that thrived in that ecosystem.

If one truly cares about all life on our planet, honey would be the only

sweetener we used. There are no other animal products used in the

restaurant, although I would be happy to discuss whether honey is in fact a

bee product and not a pollen. A Bee's gift of excess proteins(enzymes) is

no different than a farm animals gift of pulling a plow or fertilizing a

field. "

Any thoughts?

I thought that barley malt and rice syrup were the sweetners of

choice for purists.
