Guest guest
Hey Everybody, Not sure if this is appropriate, but I feel like if we want the SF veg community to be a community then it should be appropriate! I recently returned from interning at Farm Sanctuary and PETA, and have spent the last few months pursuing work and volunteer opportunities related to animal rights, the environment, or alternative media. I am currently teaching two humane education classes at after-school programs in SF schools and I just began an internship at the Board of Supervisors that I see as an opportunity to get involved in issues that affect animals at the local level. Once a week, I also give a talk at a city hostel (over a vegan meal) about my experiences at Farm Sanctuary. All of these endeavors are unpaid. I am looking for opportunities--either paid or unpaid--that (a) will make a significant contribution to animals or (b) might lead to paid work or give me experience in a field that might help me in my future career (in an uncertain capacity) within animal rights. I'm not necessarily committed to my internship at the B of Supes, since for the amount of work I do there, the extent to which it benefits animals might not be worth it. If there are better ways for me to use my time to help animals--whether it be by standing on street corners passing out " Why Vegans, " writing letters to newspaters/legislators/companies, or some other ways that I haven't thought of--that's what I want to do. Anyway, I'm writing because I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas for me. While I badly need paying work in order for my life to be sustainable out here, I am lucky that I have savings that allows me to pursue volunteer opportunities and only to work part time (if I can ever find a job!). My background is as a copy editor, though I have no allegience to that field. So, here I am, an animal rights advocate wanting to do more. Does anyone have any specific suggestions? I'd appreciate any and all ideas and feedback!
