Hi Nora, What a great question! I'm not sure if my answers are so great but let me offer my two cents worth and maybe that will encourage others with even better ideas to offer their three cents.... I've had private discussions with others who want to pursue more activist work as their primary occupation.... I hope they will come forward and share their insights. You mentioned that you have experience as a copy editor. What about considering working in the media field? I know KPFA ( public radio station in Berkeley) used to offer internships. While learning this may not give you directly correlated assistance to the animals *now*, surely learning the aspects of producing a radio program which can be used to educated thousands or millions of people would be great! You could be the next Bob Linden!! :-) This sort of fits in with option " b " , something that could be a future career. Have you considered lobbying at the State Capitol? There are many laws being considered at the state level that help or hurt animals. I think Virginia at the Fund for Animals could get you started in that direction. As far as direct, hands-on assistance to animals, what about working with the SPCA? This could be in a volunteer capacity... I think the SPCA is unique in that they have licensed state Humane Officers who actually investigate cruelty cases. Or, be a volunteer pair of eyes to help enforce existing anti-cruelty laws (at stockyards, etc) by documenting lapses.... Have you talked with people at local non-profit groups that do work you're interested in? Tell them what kind of skills you have and what kind of skills you'd like to gain through a project, maybe you'll find a good match. I'm not sure where you're at, but for SF, PCRM & PETA have small offices with employees, there's also SF SPCA. If no one is doing what you would like to do, be the first one to do it! I think we met before, at a John Robbins presentation last year?? If so, you (or that person that I talked to) had a great idea to do tabling at local Farmer's Markets. I really like that idea! Especially now that Spring is approaching... Check out the SFBAVeg calendar, there are listings for the weekly activist demonstrations on the weekends. I like your street corner idea to pass out " Why Vegan " brochures :-) I think getting carnivores to switch to even an occasional veg*n meal is truly one of the most beneficial activities for the animals. I've written all this stuff but I think the most important (and first) thing you should actually do is identify the activities that you like doing. Then see how those activities can be structured or fashioned into a " job " or " project " that helps the animals or the environment or whatever you decide to do. Borrow a trick from the corporate world. Go on informational interviews. Identify activists or people doing work that you think you might want to do, and talk with them. Good luck, Tammy _______ Get your free @ address at
Guest guest
Hi Tammy, Pete Cohon mentioned to me that you and Chris had very kindly and thoughtfully thought to schedule the 6 month anniversary of on a day other than Sunday, so as not to conflict with the Shameway protests. Thank you *SO* much. I was looking forward to the event and looking forward to putting faces to names, as our virtual community has grown so large (WELL DONE! KUDOS!). Sadly, I will be gone the weekend of the 6th/7th (d'oh!!!), so I'll miss the celebration. I will be there in spirit, however, applauding your courageous initiative to bring the larger community together, emphasizing our commonalties rather than our differences. That the response to your vision has been so positive is encouraging indeed! After seeing your email on the six-month birthday celebration earlier this weekend (and noticing the conflict with my being out of town), I thought I would drop you a note. But, as tends to happen, that activity got tabled with a million others as the chaos of life swallowed all of the minutes in my day. This morning, reading the *AMAZING* email you posted for Nora, I felt compelled to making writing to you a priority. What a GREAT response, Tammy - so thorough and interesting and helpful and insightful. Nora is such a great activist -- intelligent, dedicated, compassionate, thoughtful -- I wish she could be cloned so that she could do *everything* you suggested (!!!!). But, very possibly others on the list will be inspired by your post to follow through with some of your suggestions. :-) Hope you and Chris and all of the kitties are doing well. Guest guest
Nora, Great ideas from Tammy. I'd also suggest doing an internship at Farm Sanctuary. I've never done it, but I heard it's very rewarding (not an easy job, though) and you know you're directly benefiting animals that were badly treated before they met you. http://www.farmsanctuary.com/join/jobs.htm Erhhung Tammy [meowthunk] Wednesday, March 06, 2002 8:36 PM nora kramer; Sfbaveg RE: [sFBAVeg] Seeking job or volunteer advice > I am looking for opportunities--either paid or unpaid--that (a) will make > a significant contribution to animals or (b) might lead to paid work or > give me experience in a field that might help me in my future career (in > an uncertain capacity) within animal rights.
