Hi Karen and folks,

It's interesting when I read my messages in reverse. I finally

got some time to glance over you post and I'm like, yeah, I've

been waiting for someone experienced to go kayaking or rafting

with. Then I read a little further and saw my name mentioned

in Tammy's message. I'm definitely ready for water activities!

I haven't done river kayaking but I've done white water rafting in

small private groups about half a dozen times, so I have learned a

bit about rafting (of course when I hear the other guys talk about

" logging days " on the river, my few days is far from deeming me an

experienced rafter.

I know Anh (another fellow vegan whom I've done cooking classes

with down in Sunnyvale--has he spoken up?) is a good kayaker--

we've talked about it but have never done a trip together yet.

I also bought an used ocean kayak from the Berkeley (boating)

club last year, but since I haven't learned to do rolls (I've

used sit-on-tops a bunch of times), I can't use it yet!

I go on a lot of trips with outdoor clubs and friends, most of

whom are not veg*n, so it'll be great to get more veg*ns out in

the sun. I've tried to create a separate mailing list for like-

minded outdoor enthusiasts (bayareayoungvegetarians )

but I've only managed to meet a few of them. So I hope you're open

to having a mixed group. (BTW, if anyone reading this is over 40,

don't be discouraged by the group name--it's sort of stuck as a

misnomer. I hang out with people in their late 30s to mid 40s

all the time, so I guess if you " feel young " , you're in!)

There are a couple trips I want to do. I went backpacking in the

Trinity Alps last summer with a small vegan crowd from my veg list.

We stoped by Farm Sanctuary on the way to hug the turkeys and goats.

It was so much fun. Trinity Alps is such a huge area, so I want to

go back again and check out the gorgeous waterfalls and meadows.

The other trip, for folks with an inclination to water, is inner

tubing on Cache Creek (this one is only about two hours north of

SF). I went there the first time last summer and I had the best

time, not to mention it's like the most affordable activity! All

you need is an black inner tube or a fancier tube which you can

get for 20-30 bucks, and you're pretty much set. The section of

Cache Creek that most people go tubing has mostly class IIs and

one class III, which they call Mother.

Anyway, let's definitely co-plan something. The next trip that

I'm leading will be a 3-day (Fri eve-Mon eve) trip to the Lost

Coast (an official Stanford Outing Club trip) on 3/29-4/1. I'll

post it on this list, too, when I've written up the announcement

in case anyone's interested. Lost Coast is just south of Eureka

on the northern CA coast, and it's close to the Humboldt Redwoods

area and the Luna tree. I've been wanting to make a " pilgrimage "

to Luna for some time with like-minded people, too...

Hi Erhhung & Karen,

I'm about 300+ non-work emails behind. I'm so glad

I decided to open this mail.

Kayaking? yes, most definitely. I've been desparately

trying to hook up with a WW kayaking buddy for a long

time. I would love to hit the rivers with you guys.

But I must warn you, Karen, that I am at best, a

level II kayaker. So if we were to kayak anything

above level II, be prepared to explain to my mother

what happens to her son. Or we can go down level IV+

on a raft and watch you do your fancy moves on the

kayak.

In all cases, I'd love to be on the water again. Just

let me know when.

Anh

p.s. I own 1 whitewater kayak. I have access to

another whitewater kayak and an ocean kayak.
