Guest guest
Well, I tried the new Burger King Veggie Burger not once, but twice this weekend. I was heading up to Tahoe with a meat eater, and we needed somewhere fast, convenient, easy to eat while travelling, and which could accommodate both of us as we didn't want to go through multiple drive-thru windows. On Friday night, I was a little... not sober, shall we say. But we went through the BK drive-thru and there on the window was the sign advertising this new menu selection. I ordered one with no mayo (the bane of my drive-thru experiences in this lifetime, but that's another rant), but I don't think I mentioned the " microwaved, not grilled " option. After getting one WITH MAYO and sending it back, my new vegan burger was delivered. About all I can remember is that it had a good texture (the grilling, I imagine) and was very onion-y, which is a plus in my book. Their french fries are also vegan, and the whole combo meal was only $3.69, while just the burger is $1.99 (prices may vary at your local franchisee). On Sunday night, we stopped in Davis at another BK, and this time went in to the counter. The manager took our order ( " One veggie combo, no mayo, microwaved not grilled, and one Bacon Double Cheeseburger combo " ) and commented " Wow, you guys couldn't have ordered anything more different, could you? " :-) My reactions to this second burger: it's ok. Take any frozen veggie burger (and I'm not talking about those burgers that try and be burger-y and authentic, but actual light-beige with chunks of carrots and veggies in it vegetable patties), and microwave it. You get a soggy mess, and that's just what happened. The non-toasted bun, single slice of tomato, and copious amounts of lettuce did not help matters. I didn't add ketchup because I was trying to taste the product, and also because it didn't need any help in the moisture department. I think that the grilling might have helped the texture a lot, but again, I can't recall much from that first burger. Overall, the taste and flavor of the second burger was okay, not very oniony really but studded with little pieces of carrot and other vegetables. It was palatable, and I would eat it again if I were stuck, but I'm definitely not searching this out again, and next trip I'll push for Taco Bell instead. But it's a great start for BK, and I think if I weren't such a lover of good veggie burgers that I'd be more favorable towards this menu item. However, I just hope that non-vegetarians realize that this is about as similar to a good veggie burger (we like the ones from Amy's) as those fast-food apple pies are to a real homemade pie or one from the local bakery. *Burger King has a " coming soon " message on their website in the nutritional info section, but this article gives a nutritional breakdown (but no ingredients): http://money.cnn.com/2002/03/14/news/companies/burgerking_veggie/
