We ate at Zen Palate twice - once at the Westbury (Long Island) location,

and once at the 46th St. location. Westbury was awesome, and I'd go back

in a heartbeat. The 46th Street one wasn't as good (even with the same

dishes off the menu as we'd had at the Westbury location), and twice as

expensive.

I hear that Angela's Kitchen is amazing as well...

My favorite place in NYC is Angelica's Kitchen, which is on the lower east

side of Manhattan (either 8th St. or 12th St.).

A busy vegan place, with a sort of eclectic blend of cuisines. Also, some

nice desserts, fairly large portions.

Have a nice trip,

Jon Spear

Angelica Kitchen on 12th & 2nd is definitely the place to go for clean,

fresh and creative organic vegan food. You may also want to pick up a copy

of their cookbook while you're there-the recipes are great!

Herban Kitchen on Hudson & Spring is a great place, though they do serve

meat. Everything is organic and also fresh-their harvest plate rules.

Souen on 13th & University is macrobiotic and all organic and fresh. Some

dishes are better than others, but the good ones are REALLY good.

Helianthus on Macdougal & King is a great place for Asian food with mock

meats if you're into that.

Candle Cafe on 3rd & 75th is also quite good.

Hope this helps!

Here are a couple of my favorites...

VP2

6th Ave)

Caravan of Dreams

405 E 6th st.

212 254 1613

lots of vegan and raw dishes.

Bliss

191 Bedford Ave. (right off the 'L' train)

Brooklyn

small cafe. good brunch...

Burritoville

Many locations - Good one on Ninth Ave between 43rd

and 44th, give or take a block.

Veg-City Diner

55 W 14th St Between 5th and 6th Ave (more towards 6th

ave)

yummy vegan cakes...open late!

I would also recommend picking up a " New York

Naturally " for more veg*n restaurants... and other

services.

There's also The Vegan Guide to New York City, the 7th Edition

(Revised and Updated), by Rynn Berry and Max Friedman, with Dan Mills. I

bought one at the Union Square Farmer's Market from one of the authors, when

I was back there in December.

I had some problems with it (no area codes on some phone numbers; at least

two restaurants no longer in business, no explanation of abbreviations).

Restaurants going out of business is not rare, I know, but one of them had

been out of business for at least a year or two, maybe more, according to my

friend who lives around the corner from where it used to be, and this

booklet was dated 2000-2001. My (non-vegan but very veg*n-friendly) friends

and I found excellent places on our own.

Nonetheless, the booklet is a good little reference, has a handy little map

of Manhattan, organized by restaurant location, and they do ask for feedback

on the last page (though you have to snail mail it in, no email address

listed).

If you're intereseted, go to the Union Square Farmer's Market on Mon., Wed.,

Fri. or Sat. year round, and you should find a man with a little card table

selling the little yellow booklets, along with a couple of books on going

vegan.

Or you can try the contact info:

Ryan Berry

159 Eastern Parkway, Suite 2H

Brooklyn, NY 11238

(says to enclose $5.00 plus 75 cents postage for each copy)
