Dear Friends,

I suppose it's not that surprising that this interesting and inspiring piece

of news wasn't picked up by the media. On another list, I noticed an alert

indicating that PETA's site, http://www.goveg.com was undergoing a revamp. I

surfed over to the new site and was really impressed by the new layout. It's

attractive, content-rich, non-offensive, and user-friendly. Check it out!

Legendary Labor Leader's Kind Example Will Net $1,000 From PETA

Norfolk, Va. - If he were alive today, vegetarian César Chávez would be

celebrating his 75th birthday on Sunday, and PETA is taking the opportunity

to honor the man whom the late Sen. Robert Kennedy called " one of the heroic

figures of our time " with its first " Sí, Se Puede " (Yes, It's Possible)

Award-an award that comes with a $1,000 cash prize for the person who does

the most to promote kindness to animals and/or vegetarianism in the Hispanic

community. Nominations (including self-nominations) must be submitted by

December 31, 2002.

Not only was César Chávez the most vocal defender of migrant worker rights

in this nation's history, he also believed that nonviolence begins with what

we eat and stopped eating meat of all kinds in 1968 " after realizing that

animals feel afraid, cold, hungry, and unhappy [as we humans do]. "

Chávez once said, " Kindness and compassion toward all living things is a

mark of a civilized society. ... Racism, economic deprival, dog fighting and

cock fighting, bullfighting, and rodeos are cut from the same fabric:

violence. "
