Hi all,

 

I am disappointed to see how the Washington Post reported the article, as a

" fluff " piece, not even questioning the obvious ethical issues that this

" research " raises.

 

Of course the military agency DARPA is going to tell the press that this

work will somehow benefit people and save human lives...

 

I saw on another group (about robotics), someone posted a different

reporting, by CNN, which is more balanced, and at least quotes a different

scholar with a critical viewpoint of the work:

 

 

: Randy Gallistel, a professor of psychology

and cognitive science at Rutgers University, said it's basically the same

thing, with a twist, that scientists found they could do almost 50 years ago

by stimulating the reward-sensing area of a rat's brain.

 

" Without the gee-whizery, without the remote-control and so on, that this

kind of thing was possible has been obvious for decades, " he said.

Yep, all too true. I first read about it on the BBC, and they did mention

the ethical issue. Your CNN link was malfunctioning, but here¹s the one I
