Guest guest
Hi all, I am disappointed to see how the Washington Post reported the article, as a " fluff " piece, not even questioning the obvious ethical issues that this " research " raises. Of course the military agency DARPA is going to tell the press that this work will somehow benefit people and save human lives... I saw on another group (about robotics), someone posted a different reporting, by CNN, which is more balanced, and at least quotes a different scholar with a critical viewpoint of the work: : Randy Gallistel, a professor of psychologyand cognitive science at Rutgers University, said it's basically the same thing, with a twist, that scientists found they could do almost 50 years ago by stimulating the reward-sensing area of a rat's brain. " Without the gee-whizery, without the remote-control and so on, that this kind of thing was possible has been obvious for decades, " he said. here is the other link: http://www.cnn.com/2002/TECH/science/05/01/remote.controlled.rats.ap/index.h tml narashankar Wednesday, May 01, 2002 9:52 PM [sFBAVeg] Technology gone berserk >Hi Friends, > >Here is an article about Franken Robotics. > >http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A18261-2002May1.html > >- shankar n. >

Yep, all too true. I first read about it on the BBC, and they did mention the ethical issue. Your CNN link was malfunctioning, but here¹s the one I found: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_1961000/1961798.stm tony
