Guest guest Posted May 13, 2002 Report Share Posted May 13, 2002 Associate, West Coast, State Gov Affairs & Pub Policy Job Category: Legal Type: Full time Salary: 60 K Description: Track the introduction and movement of legislation pertaining to animals in the region;Analyze pending legislation and assist in the formulation of the ASPCA's position; draft position statements and legislative alerts;Lobby state legislators/staffers and other key government officials/policy makers to promote passage or defeat of bill; assist in strategies to move/defeat bill; negotiate amendments.Legal research; draft legislation; analysis of proposed regulations and drafting formal comments; Understanding of the various state legislative procedures; work to promote and implement animal welfare policies consistent with organization philosophy;Work with the media to help publicize legislation/issues and generate public support; help develop and launch campaigns around priority legislation/issues.Grassroots advocacy - outreach and broad base coalition building with local organizations/lobbyists where appropriate; Respond to public inquiries via telephone, e-mail, correspondence; monthly reports, administrative matters, including lobby registration and reports Must be an attorney with the ability to juggle numerous projects, organized, professional, strong analytical skills, understanding of the legislative process, well spoken; excellent writing/speaking skills. Education: Doctorate (PhD, MD, etc.) Languages: English Additional Qualifications: Must have JD, be admitted to the bar in California and have 2-3 years post law school experience; Experience in government affairs and with the legislative process and/or familiarity with the issues. Commitment to animal protection preferred, but with ability to work within the ASPCA philosophy; ability to travel to state capitals to lobby.
