Guest guest
7: 30 p.m. tonight at Cody's Bookstore (Telegraph Ave. and Haste in Berkeley). This is near U.C. Berkeley. Steven Wise is a law professor at Rutger's University where he teaches what I believe was the first law school course ever offered on animal rights and the law. He is also the author of " Rattling the Cage " . From Cody's website: STEVEN WISE considers DRAWING THE LINE: Science and the Case for Animal Rights .. The leading advocate for non-human animals in the US, Wise, in the words of the London Sunday Independent, " represents what the animal-rights lobby has hitherto lacked: a charismatic advocate with a detailed grasp of both science and law, and a reputation of indisputable credibility. " In his new book, Wise applies the law's firm benchmarks for personhood to seven more nonhuman animals - gorillas, orangutans, African Grey parrots, Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, African elephants, dogs, and honeybees - to see which should be granted basic legal rights. Drawing the Line will generated debate and intense interest among those concerned with law, those concerned with animals, and those who care about justice.
