VEGAN / HOLISTIC PET RESOURCES

Dogs are ominvores, thus are very easy to feed

vegetarian.

Some of the vegan dog foods have been on the market

for

well over 20 years! Cats are true carnivores, but

with food

or supplements that contain plant or synthetic forms

of

nutrients they mandatorily need like Vitamin A,

taurine &

aracidonic acid, they can be healthy vegans. Cats are

harder

to switch because they are usually pickier eaters.

Dogs will

like most all vegan " people " food. Cats usually like

avacado,

cantelope, watermelon, peas, corn, seitan (a fake meat

substance made from wheat gluten-chop it into very

small

pieces), oatmeal.

If you choose to feed your companion animal meat, it

would

be healthier to add fresh, raw, organic meat to fresh

vegetables

& grains or vegan commercial food, because of the

rendered

products that go into the majority of meat-based pet

foods.

Rendered ingredients will be listed on the label as

-by products

or -meal. (meat-by products, chicken by-products,

bone meal,

fish meal, etc.) As stated in the book MAD COWBOY:

Plain

Truth From the Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat by

Howard

Lyman, the following items go into the " blender " at

the rendering

plant: ground-up dead horses (who can no longer run

races), dogs,

cats (from the shelter & vets offices), pigs,

chickens, turkeys,

& the blood & fecal matter of cows & chickens. This

mixture

goes into farm animal feed as well as pet foods.

It's great to give our pets as much (organic) raw

veggies &

fruits as they want. They don't tend to chew their

food well,

so it's smart to blend it in a food processor or

Vitamix. You

can soak almonds overnight in water & then blend them

into

a mix of romaine, celery, carrots & brocolli, or any

other

veggies you discover that they like. Dogs usually

love many

types of fruit: pear, apple, watermelon, grapes,

cantelope,

banana, avacado, papaya, mango. To facilitate digestion

&

assimilation, it is best to finely chop or mash

fruits.

Wet & dry vegan cat & dog food. Cats seem to always

love at least the dry. Dogs love both. Only available

by mail.

Cheaper in bulk; you may want to order with a friend.

WYSONGS vegan dog & cat dry food. Rarely found in pet

food stores anymore but easily available on line:

http://www.wysongs.com

It's one type for both dogs & cats, dry only. Comes

in 4 lb.

bags, so that you expose less to the air at a time

(causing

the oils to go rancid). You can buy a " case " which is

5

bags, & get a discount.

PET GUARD wet dog food - available in all health food

stores. They just changed the label. Old label is

bright

green with a collie on it; new label is green & tan

with a

yellow lab on it. They do not make a veg dry food as

yet.

NATURAL LIFE vegetarian dog food, green bag, in all

health food stores, 4 lb. or 20 lb. bag. It's vegan

tho just

labeled as veg. They also make a wet food but it

tends to

be overly moist. (And gets stuck on the roof of my

dog's

mouth!)

NATURES RECIPE veg wet & dry dog food (bag & can has

a pink stripe), available in Petco & other pet food

stores.

I personally recommend the other brands over this, but

in

rural areas this is sometimes the only one available

in a store.

MEGAN BAMFORD, DVM - in Sun Valley. (worth the drive!)

818-768-0954 . Holistic vet, homeopath & certified

animal

chiropractor. Her partner does animal acupuncture.

They

are both very caring, very attentive & very thorough.

The

acupuncturist will show you points to massage at home

to

continue daily stimulation, to help relieve symptoms.

NANCY SCANLAN, DVM - at Sherman Oaks Vet Group,

818-784-9977, on Moorpark, just E. of Woodman, Tue.

thru

Thur. only. Very reputable holistic vet. Ask to be

put on the

cancellation list if she's booked up. Excellent

acupuncture,

chiropractic & herbs. Great article she wrote on the

dangers

of vaccines: http://www.pwgazette.com/animalvacs.htm

These vets are not themselves vegan, thus some of the

remedies

they recommend contain animal ingredients. So if that

matters

to you, do inform them of that. They do not

necessarily

recommend a vegan pet diet, but will respect the human

companion's choices.
