Guest guest
Dear Tammy & other heads: Thanks, Tammy, for sharing the fun & insightful one-liners offered by other heads. I personally LOVED this last " fun question, " and think this sort of exchange can be extremely useful to all of us when we find ourselves being challenged by coworkers, relatives, people walking down the street, etc. I'm the type of person who thinks of the absolute best response about 10 minutes too late, and I've often thought that compiling (and memorizing!!) a list of quick one-line responses would be so incredibly useful. I didn't respond to the quiz because: (i) Luddite that I am, it took me a while to figure out how to link my account to my subscription to ; and (ii) dullard that I am, I didn't have the snappiest responses to the questions posed. Generally, my responses tend to be (surprise!) rather long-winded and (I like to think) information-packed. Why veggie: It's better for my health, better for the planet, and better for the animals. * If I'm chatting with someone who identifies strongly with labor solidarity, I'll say, " I don't eat meat for the same reason I don't buy clothes that are made in sweatshops. In both cases, disenfranchised people with very few choices end up doing our dirty work for us. " And then I talk about slaughterhouse workers, most dangerous job in America, sky-high turnover rate, blah blah blah. If the person is still listening, I talk about how most chicken operations now involve some kind of sharecropping ( " why should the corporations buy the farm when they can buy the farmer? " ) and pig operations are moving in that direction (approximately 60% of pig facilities are vertically integrated). The family farm crisis has been escalated by animal-based agribusiness. * If I'm eating lunch with someone who's eating meat and they ask me why I'm veggie, I talk about public health concerns and gross them out by talking about pathogen issues, and how one hamburger possibly containing the body parts of hundreds of cows, and it's just an epidemic waiting to happen. What do you eat: Foods from the new four food groups as outlined by the Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine - whole grains, beans/legumes, fruits, and vegetables. And then I launch into the fact that this diet contains zero cholesterol, is very low in saturated fat, has sensible amounts of protein, and ample fiber and complex carbohydrates. Plus, plenty of phytochemicals that safeguard my body against cancer. Then (if I still have an audience), I talk about all the great recipes that I make - veggie shepherd's pie, vegan chocolate mousse, Thai veggie curry, blah blah blah Okay - now you know why I didn't respond in the first place. But, please do keep the contests coming. They are fun! Cheers, Alka Tammy [tammy] Monday, May 20, 2002 9:18 PM SF-Be-A-Veg [sFBAVeg] Spring Contest suspended Hi all, Here's the responses received to the last question: " Tell us your snappiest one-liner when asked what vegetarians/vegans eat, or why you're vegetarian/vegan..... " ****************************************** Why veggie: I wouldn't want anyone chewing on MY dead body. or...I don't understand why anyone would WANT to eat meat. Why are you a carnivore? ******************************************* In response to " What do you eat? " " No one with a Mom. " ******************************************* When someone says " I couldn't do that " , I just look at them and say " I couldn't NOT do it. " ******************************************* I don't eat anyone who had a mother. There is no new question this week. We're actually suspending the contest for now. The response has been pretty light, actually. Is there interest in having " fun " contests like this? If so, we can try to come up with a contest that is more appealing (suggestions welcome). All the entries for this contest will be rolled into the next one. Or, if there is not sufficient interest, then we'll just draw from the entries we have. Thanks to everyone who played!
