I'm writing in response to Tammy's paragraph about list members contact

information being sold.

While I agree it is necessary to caution people that their names/addresses/email

address may be collected, it is my opinion that the bothersome ‘junk mail’ may

have initially led to your personal involvement in vegetarianism and surrounding

animal issues.

If you really take a moment to think about it, how did you first hear about

PETA, or IDA, or even WWF, what about Amnesty International, Greenpeace? How

many of us would be even remotely involved in any social justice movements had

we not first been alerted to the issue through direct mail or ‘junk mail’.

I don't intend to defend all direct mail practices and am not interested in

getting into a lengthy discussion about the trade practices. But I thought it at

least interesting to mention, also from personal experience, that while it can

be bothersome, had my information not been exchanged/sold/whatever, it is likely

that I would NEVER have heard of PETA or any other animal rights organization

for that matter, NEVER have become vegan, NEVER become aware of any social

justice issues.

Also worth mentioning, many organizations use recycled paper for their direct

mail, and generally, the ‘junk mail’ is entirely recyclable, including the

window material.

And Tammy, please don’t take this as a personal attack, I just wanted to tell my

story…

Tammy <tammy wrote: Hi all,

This portion of the message is directed to those who send their posts

anonymously or send posts with commercial content. The bottom part is about

veggie social events.

I would like to encourage people to sign their posts. This is a SF Bay Area

list, and one of the nice things about the list is that we'll actually get

to meet the people in our online community too. Anonymous posts don't lend

themselves to creating an online community. Anonymous posts will be held to

a higher guideline.

First-time & Anonymous posters, if you have questions about what the

guidelines are, please read the charter before posting.

In particular, I would like to warn people that there are organizations

(both commercial and non-profit) that collect contact information and

re-sell it. I know from personal experience that there is an organization

who has my contact information and is selling it to a mailing list broker,

like " Names in the News " .... http://www.nincal.com/ (I am one of those

people that *always* tell that groups that I donate or purchase from that I

do not want my contact information sold. In these days of direct marketing,

contact info is a source of revenue for profit & non-profit organizations.)

(Okay, Admin stuff done...... sorry to bore those of you who have

responsibly been signing your names to posts and conscious of what messages

you send to this list versus others.)

EVENTS

We met some folks on Friday and it was great to put faces to names. We

enjoy planning small events because we get an opportunity to interact with

everyone. We also enjoy going to movies & eating out, so will be planning

more events like the recent one. I also think some letter writing parties

will be fun, too. I encourage everyone to just plan the type of veggie/AR

event that they want to do, and then post it to the list. From the

responses that we received, there are a lot of us that like to go out on

Friday nights with new & old friends.

Cheers,

Tammy
