Tony, Do you also think that women's-only spaces or clubs and African American fraternities are unfortunate? I don't. Being around people who share a fundamental facet of your identity is awfully affirming in a world that's discriminatory. (Granted, gay people are treated with a lot more respect and decency in San Francisco than just about any place in the free world, but I'm coming from a community where I am both the only vegan and the only dyke ballsy enough to hold her sweetie's hand in public.) It would just be nice, on occasion, to be around people who have felt the same alienation I've encountered. (Also, Tony -- not to be blunt or obvious, but how many " social outings " are attended by some people in the hopes, subconscious or not, of meeting someone cute there to possibly date? I'm not saying this would be one's sole agenda in attending a potluck -- the food is reason enough! -- but being human, it's a plus. One out of one thousand people, possibly less, eats a strictly vegan diet. Approximately four out of every one hundred women are queers of some stripe. You do the math -- it's rough! I'd totally love to hang out with ANY vegetarians or vegans in a group, but I'd also like to hang out with specifically QUEER vegetarians and vegans in a group at some point. It's not about separation, Tony, but celebration -- co-existing with veg*ns of different sexualities and hanging out with other queer veg folk and revelling in the fact that we might very well not be the only one of our kind for the first time in our lives need not be mutually exclusive. Guest guest
There are several, but another one would be good! Marti Kheel organizes a lesbian and bi-women's veg. potluck every other month or so in the East Bay (she posts announcements on ba-sappho among other places). Also, there's a Gay and Lesbian Vegetarian list on queernet.org, but they're not very active right now. A group in San Francisco would be nice ...
