Guest guest
Stephanie, I was much less offended by the ad (by the way, the text of the ad that I saw read " Fur trim: disgusting " , not " unsightly fur trim " , so they must have modified it at some point) than Ingrid Newkirk's follow-up comments in Ms. Magazine. She added insult to injury and blatantly dissed a large percentage of the women reading the magazine -- I don't have the text, sadly, to refer to, but rest assured that she was over the top in her snotty condescension towards someone who had addressed her with more respect than she deserved. Certainly I understand that misogyny and mainstream beauty standards are deeply rooted and not going to change overnight...I don't, however, think this justifies bettering the lives of some animal species at the expense of homo sapiens. ( " The Sexual Politics of Meat " has lots to say about the intrinsic link between different forms of violence.) Shock value is an effective marketing tactic, sure, but there are other ways to achieve it without exploiting _women_. How do you feel about the " Don't Be a Whopper! " ads? Erin ps -- Note that I specifically dissed PETA's president and not the group itself. There's a difference there. - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.
