Guest guest
Some of you have heard of Farm Sanctuary's Sentient Beings campaign (http://www.sentientbeings.org), which asks cities to adopt official proclamations that recognize farm animals as feeling beings. So far, 5 cities have adopted this proclamation: in NJ: Trenton, Newark, Morristown, Cedar Grove and in Ohio: Cincinnatti, which also declared June 11th as " Farm Animals Have Feelings Day. " The Amazing Alka and I think the power of grassroots activists in the SF Bay Area can tackle such cities as Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley, San Jose, and many others. It's really just a matter of who is willing to take up the effort. I have developed a step-by step procedure, which entails some letter-writing and phone calls. There is already an animal-friendly councilwoman in Berkeley, so it should be a no-brainer for the individual who wants to do Berkeley. All we need now is for people to step up and volunteer to get your city to adopt official proclamations that recognize farm animals as feeling beings. Please remember that this is more than just a symbolic gesture. Where farm animals have been recognized as sentient beings (formally in the charter of the European Union), they have gotten a lot of protections, and many specific cruel practices, like veal crates and battery cages are banned or are being phased out. It is also a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness and public discussion about the roles farm animals can/should play in society and how we ultimately should treat them -- and if they should be used for " food " at all! I look forward to hearing from anyone who's interested. Even if you just want to know more about the procedure, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for your consideration.
