Guest guest
Hi All, I'd like to introduce myself -- I'm Andrea, 29. I happily lurked on the list for several months while living in Santa Cruz. I just moved to Japan two weeks ago to teach english for a year. Someone posted several months ago about a vegan passport. http://www.vegansociety.com/shop/ Whoever made the post, THANK YOU! I sent away for it and got it in the mail shortly after arriving here. I must give it the shout-out it deserves -- it's been a total lifesaver!! Seriously, I might have starved (or unknowingly might have eaten some fish sauce or dairy) if I didn't have the page in the passport which explains the vegan diet in Japanese. Even though the residents I've encoutered have never met a vegan before, they read the page with the utmost curiosity and after a few head scratches, they're more than happy to accommodate. Even in tiny restaurants, there's always rice, salad and tofu. At sushi restaurants, there's plenty of yummy kappa maki (cucumber roll). I'm also teaching my english students a bit about veganism, so let's hope a national trend ensues. As a footnote, many people predicted it would be too difficult to live in Japan and remain vegan. I'm happy to report that it is not only possible, but quite enjoyable! Cheers, Andrea ===== _________ A.
