Guest guest
June 25, 2002 VEGANS EAT WELL, AND WIN PRIZES Editor -- I do not know what report Martin Peter McGurrin (Letters, June 22) refers to, but many studies show that vegetarians outlive meat eaters and, more importantly, avoid many killer diseases. To answer his question here are some names. Nobel Prize-winning vegetarians: Isaac B. Singer, Sir C. V. Raman and Chandrashekar Subrahmanyam. Track star vegetarians: Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses and Dave Scott, who won the Ironman Triathlon Championship six times. Hank Aaron ran the bases rather well after his record home-run hits also. Eat green and be healthy! VEGETARIANS HAVE CONTRIBUTED GREATLY Editor -- I am writing this letter in response to Martin Peter McGurrin's letter to the editor on June 22. As a vegetarian, I found his letter a bit offensive and inflammatory. First of all, I would like to have scientific proof of his claim that vegetarians live shorter lives than meat-eating people. Secondly, in response to his question of vegetarian athletes and Nobel Laureates I have the following list: Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, Thomas Edison, Sir Isaac Newton, Clara Baron, St. Frances of Assisi, Susan B. Anthony and Mohandas Gandhi. And yes -- Einstein won a Nobel Prize. Also, in the Olympic ring, I am sure that most have heard of Edwin Moses, Kathy Johnson and Carl Lewis -- all of whom are vegetarians. If you are not a vegetarian, that is your personal choice. But please, do not attack vegetarians and intimate that vegetarians have not contributed greatly to the world. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2002/06/25/ED1\ 26927.DTL - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.
