Guest guest
**** Saturday, July 13th: Vegy Star Party!**** Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve/Equestrian Parking Lot Area ==> Please RSVP NO LATER than THURSDAY, JULY 11, 2002, as there are a limited number of night-use permits available for automobiles. We will begin to assemble at 7:15 PM at the " Park and Ride " lot located on Page Mill Road in Palo Alto--about 1/4 mile West of the exit ramp for I-280 and Page Mill Road. Please be on time as we will depart promptly for Skyline Ridge OSP NO LATER than 7:30 PM since it is about a 25-minute ride on a very " long and winding (but very scenic Page Mill) road! " Folks who are late will have to drive directly to Skyline Ridge OSP--and they must be in the equestrian parking lot area by sundown--as the park rangers will be LOCKING THE GATES 30 MINUTES AFTER SUNDOWN! Please RSVP @ (408)410-2186 and leave your name, telephone number, number of people you are bringing, and whether you will be bringing a telescope or other viewing device. Event Description: Whether you know a lot...a little...or nothing at all about the night sky, this will be a great opportunity to learn about the planets, stars and other celestial features of the Northern hemisphere while enjoying the company of fellow veggies for good conversation...tasty vegy snacks...and perhaps a shooting star or two. Although a telescope is nice, binoculars will do just fine...and if all else fails, we will be doing mostly " naked-eye " astronomy. Things will get under way as soon as the sun sets. For folks who arrive early, Skyline Ridge has a few hiking trails to use for a pre-star party hike. Just make sure to be back to the parking lot area by sundown (while we all still can see each other!) As the sun gradually sinks under the Western horizon, more of the night sky will present itself to us. Star maps will be provided to all persons attending the event...as well as instructions on how to use them. Recommended things to bring: portable folding chairs, a ground cloth or tarpaulin, a blanket, two(2) flashlights, insect repellant, sweatshirt with hood, comfortable shoes with socks, and layers of clothes to dampen any chill from the evening air. If you bring food and/or beverages, it is recommended that you leave them in your car to avoid attracting nocturnal wildlife to the gathering site. Other items to note: + No open fires of any type are permitted in the preserve area + No companion animals are permitted in the preserve area + All on-site vehicles must have a night use permit visible through their windshields + Restrooms will be available on site For persons who will becoming late (after 7:30 PM), here are the directions to the event site: DIRECTIONS TO Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve/Equestrian Parking Lot Area: Take I-280 to Page Mill Road exit in Palo Alto. Continue west on Page Mill Road for about ten miles (25 minutes) until reaching Skyline Boulevard. Turn left on Skyline Boulevard and continue for about one mile until you see the sign on the right side of the road for Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. After turning right into the preserve entrance, bear right and look for a sign indicating two different parking areas. Turn left at the first road (parking by permit) and continue until you see the parking lot. Look for the event coordinator (Phil Becker) wearing the white safari hat! Alternate route: Take I-17 South to Los Gatos and then head North on Route 9 through Saratoga for about 15 miles. Turn right(North) on Route 35 (Skyline Boulevard) and continue for about 5 miles until you see the sign for Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. Turn left into the preserve entrance and continue as indicated above. If you have any questions, or for further information, please call Phil at (408)410-2186. Move over, Orion-the-hunter...the veggies are coming! See you on Saturday! :<)
