Guest guest
I haven't read more than the first page, but... " If the members of the American medical establishment were to have a collective find-yourself-standing-naked-in-Times-Square-type nightmare, this might be it. They spend 30 years ridiculing Robert Atkins, author of the phenomenally-best-selling ''Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution'' and ''Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution,'' accusing the Manhattan doctor of quackery and fraud, only to discover that the unrepentant Atkins was right all along. " The American medical establishment has *hardly* discovered that Atkins' has been right all along. Just two quick points to the contrary...I've recently read Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy by Walter Willett, of the Harvard Public School of Health, author of the textbook " Nutritional Epidemiology, " and author or co-author of over 600 published scientific papers. His book includeds dietary recommendations based on a summary of all the large nutritional research studies to date. While he is not anti-fat (with good reason), he certainly doesn't recommend anything close to Atkins. Another point, if Atkins is correct, then the longest-lived, formerly studied population in the world would not be the California Seventh-day Adventists who are not on the Atkins side of the diet spectrum. Within their population, the vegetarians live longer than the meat-eaters. Jack - " Colleen A. Patrick " <colleen Thursday, July 11, 2002 5:12 PM [sFBAVeg] NYT Magazine Article > Great! Guest guest
As with so many things in life, this is a complicated issue, too complicated to be boiled down to the binary question of " low fat diet vs. low carb diet. " And focusing on weight loss ignores issues like cancer, bone health, etc. You wouldn't really know it from that article, but it is of course possible reduce both fats (especially animal and trans fats) and overly-refined carbs and sugars at the same time. Just not something that most Standard American Dieters could imagine doing... I think that Dr. Joel Furhman has excellent nutrition and diet info. Here's his take on the Atkins Diet: http://www.drfuhrman.com/atkins.htm Ian At 05:12 PM 7/11/02 -0700, you wrote: >Great!
