Hi everyone,

The SF Bay Area is a large region, with millions of people.

Vegetarians and vegans are a very tiny percentage of that

population. We saw a need for an online community for all the local

veg*ns, a place where all veg*ns, regardless of why they became

veg*n, could share news, ask questions, or otherwise find the

camraderie or support for their veg*n lifestyle.

We officially started the San Francisco Bay Area Vegetarians

(SFBAVeg) October 2001. Since then, over 370 people have joined

('s member count is 377 as of today) An average month has

approximately 200 messages. We hope SFBAVeg continues to grow and

find new members. I know several of our new members were referrals

from existing members, and that's the best advertisement of all.

But for us, it's not really about how many members SFBAVeg has or how

often the members post. It's about growing our veg*n community.

Making it easier to live a vegetarian lifestyle. Being able to share

information about news or events that directly impact us. Not having

to be the only veg*n at the 4th of July BBQ. Finding new friends who

share your same reasons for being a veg*n. Not having to ask for the

umpteenth time " Is that veg*n? "

With that in mind, being able to learn more about our fellow

SFBAVeg'ers, to foster that community spirit/feeling, we thought it

would be fun to make that the theme for this Summer's contest. We

are off to a slow start with the contest, so we thought we'd provide

some context around the " Why " of it all. If you're an veg/AR activist

or event organizer, tell us about what you're working on, too.

Here's the details on the Summer Contest. The Grand Prize is sure to

make you new friends when you use it!

By the way, the contests are done purely for fun. If they continue

to be well-received, we'll continue doing them. We're looking

forward to meeting you!

Cheers,

Tammy & Chris
