Guest guest
Dear Tammy, Lunch Brigade, & other friends ~ This is all such fabulous information on veggie options in SF. A couple of years ago I had compiled a list of veggie restaurants in SF. Taking a page from PETA's Kelle Kacmarcik & Jannette Patterson, the list was constructed as a wallet-sized guide which we would then pass out at leafletings or distribute at literature tables. I've thought before, and I'm reminded it of it through this exchange, that having a list of restaurants that are not vegetarian but do have veggie options would be very, very useful. I would volunteer to compile all the information if people wanted to jump in and offer insights into non-veg restaurants that serve *good* veggie options. It would be especially useful if people could note whether the options are veggie or vegan. After compiling a list, I can format it nicely to generate an attractive handout (the veggie restaurant guide was a third of the page in very small print; this may have to be a full page, both sides, in very tiny print). I think this would be very, very useful for all of us, and also in our efforts to turn people onto veggie foods (when we urge people to go veggie, handing them a list of restaurants that serve veggie foods goes a long way in convincing people how easy it can be). After the brochure is completed, I can mail/email it out to whoever would like it. Thanks so much! With the closure of VegTime, I don't know of any in the downtown SF/financial area. I don't eat out for lunch much (I usually brown bag it) but I've come across these various places: RINCON FOOD CORNER - Market & Spear Arabi in Rincon center - Middle Eastern food, like hummus, tabouli, dolmas, mjeddra, falafel, various salads (bean salads, vegetable salads, couscous salads, etc).. they have 2 soups every day, and one of them is usually vegan. You can pick 3 salad combo for $5.95, or a soup & half-sandwich for $5, I think... I'd guess about 75% of the food is vegetarian, with over 50% vegan. This place has the most vegan options of all the downtown restaurants that I'm familiar with. Also in Rincon: Chili Up - they have 1 or 2 vegan chilis Wazwan (?) - an Indian restaurant, not sure what's vegan there, they do have veggie stuff There's other restaurants in the Food Court (Thai, Chinese, Korean) that probably have veggie stuff but I usually go to Arabi. Rincon is where I usually go when I'm dining with my veggie friends, or with veggie/non-veggie friends as there's something for everyone. Across the street from Rincon: Lightening Foods - they have a veggie sandwich on the menu, and they have a salad bar at $5.25/lb. The person I spoke to knew the term " vegan " (which is always nice), and was quite accomodating in finding out about dishes. Even told me they featured organic produce (like the spinach) in their salad line up. I suggested they label which dishes are vegan :-) I've been there only once.. While what I picked was delicious, it was also heavy! Long Life Noodle House on Steuart - they have a few veggie things on the menu. I can't remember if any of the entrees are vegan or if you have to request a modification to a veggie one. SF Soup Company - on Mission/Beale - always has a vegan split pea soup on their menu. They have rotating daily specials, occasionally one of those is also veg*n. Their soups are labeled with characters signifyiing vegetarian, non-dairy, spicy, or low-fat. Burger Bistro - never been there - but I could see through the glass front that they do have one menu of " Veggie Burgers " ... There is also another Food Court in the Spear Street Tower. It used to have a burrito place (maybe 360 burrito?) that had a few veggie/vegan choices (if you omit cheese).. I haven't been there for several years so I don't know if that's still true. There is a Farmer's Market on Tuesday's -- Justin Herman Plaza -- I'm told from a friend who goes there that it has lots of yummy organic fruits as well as savory vegan pies. Perhaps we could take a page out of Das' book. He works with corporate cafeterias to get them to incorporate vegan food on their menus. We've worked at the same company twice now, and he's done it both times.
