Guest guest
Dear Erin, I don't know any places in Berkeley but one of my favorite, very inexpensive places to eat lunch in SF is " Golden Era " . They specialize in Vietnamese & Chinese style dishes using soy gluten instead of meat & do both vegetarian & vegan style dishes. Golden Era is located on O'Farrell St. btwn. Jones & Leavenworth (tel. 673-3136). Their lunch specials cost around $5.00 & I think you could probably eat something pretty cheap for dinner if you make wise choices. (3) examples of my fave dishes they serve: Coconut Curry Vermicelli Soup (costs like $5.25 or $5.50) -- a mouth-watering dish served with chunks of soy gluten " chicken " , thin-white vermicelli noodles, coconut milk, chunks of potato, onions & carrots (you can ask them to add broccoli for only 50 cents extra which is what I usually do). This particular dish is served to you in a HUGE bowl which will definitely fill you up Fish in Ginger Sauce in a Claypot (costs $7.00 I think) -- a mouth watering soy gluten " fish " , served in a mouthwatering ginger sauce (you can add broccoli for 50 cents which is what I usually do), heavenly..... Buddah Bun -- This is listed under appetizers (cost $2.00) & it is HUGE -- it's like a steamed sweet & sour pork bun but instead of meat they fill it with veggies & glass noodles -- very tasty & filling Enjoy, Carla Funk San Francisco, CA Erin McWilliams [macktivist] Tuesday, July 30, 2002 5:41 PM [sFBAVeg] CHEAP vegan eats? Two weeks in the Bay now, working at a temporary job while I look for something more permanent. I'm pretty broke and have found that a lot of the places catering to herbivorous diets are cost-prohibitive. Anyone want to point me in the right direction for inexpensive victuals? My best finds so far are Lanesplitters' Nota Ricotta pizza ($2.25 for a pan-style slice heaping with fake cheese!) and the $3.95 lunch special, which is big enough to feed two if you're a small-and-frequent-meals gal like me, at Long Life Vegi House. There's also vegan soft-serve ice cream at a diner on San Pablo...I just found out about it this week and can't recall the name of it but I can't wait to try it out. So, folks, out with it: barring the burrito, where can a girl fill up for less than five bucks? Erin Health - Feel better, live better http://health. *Tell your friends to Be-A-Veg with SFBAVeg! Guest guest
hi Erin and all: here's some berkeley tips of cheap vegan eats: * Vegi Food restaurant on Vine Street just west of Shattuck (about 10 blocks north of downtown)-- the entire menu is vegan, and I can always fill up there for 5 bucks. my favorite-- the Bean curd in black bean sauce Chow Mein with veggies-- you get a huge plate of it for like $4.75. you get free tea with your meal too. their veggie pot stickers are also amazing-- ask for them steamed instead of fried, trust me they are better steamed. For a really exciting/unusual dish, order their Fried Soybean sheets with greens. Its not on the menu, its on the list of Specials against the back wall that never changes. other dishes on the menu are hit and miss, as Vegi Food does not use any garlic, onion, and other random things in their cooking (for religious reasons I believe). their curry sauce is awful. many of their spicy gluten and bean curd dishes are good though. * Tofu Energy mini-sandwich (I think its $2.50 or $3) at Raw Energy on Addison Street in downtown Berkeley just west of Shattuck (next to 24 hr fitness); everything at Raw Energy is vegan and organic-- their raw pizza is fabulous, and so is their super veggie sandwich (which even though it is a lot bigger than the mini-tofu sandwich, I find them both equally filling). * Spicy Asian noodle salad at the Juice Bar Collective on Vine Street, just east of Shattuck. I think its $3, or something in that neighborhood. I always order a half order, and then get one of their tasty smoothies or their famous vegan lemon poppyseed cookie (which is even non GMO!). their tofu chocolate pie is also excellent. they are only open from 10a.m.-4:30p.m. though, which is annoying. they also have veggie sandwiches I believe, although I never have ordered them. * Vik's Indian food in West Berkeley on Allston between 5th and 6th. cheap, authentic and nearly all vegetarian indian food at great prices (from $3.50-$4.95). I really love #9, the Batura Cholle. not sure if its truly vegan-- because they probably use ghee, but what's the matter with a little ghee anyway? pick 3 dishes to share between 2 people and us will be stuffed. *Great Wall Chinese restaurant, on College Ave, just outside of Berkeley, between Alcatraz and Claremont. Their lunch special is as cheap as Long Life Veggie House's-- and I think its even better. be sure and ask for soup with no egg. my favorite dish there is their Hunan " chicken " with veggies. and finally, my most recent discovery: *a little sushi place on College Ave just south of Ashby (maybe its called Manchuku?) has an amazing mango and asparagus roll called " The Elmwood Roll. " they also have some other creative veggie rolls, a tasty seaweed salad, and a japanese bean cake desert that is vegan. This place comes nowhere close to rivalling Chaya-- (the entirely vegan Japanese restaurant in north Berkeley on Shattuck/Virginia that is my favorite restaurant in the whole Bay Area), but it is a hell of a lot cheaper and a nice option if you're in that neighborhood. good eating!
