They are called " Nutria " and are not native to the region. They are

apparently very destructive to native habitats and ecosystems, and cause

quite a bit of damage to local infrastructure.

 

Not saying that I approve of going after them with rifles, but from what

I've read there's a real epidemic in places where the nutria population

has exploded. They've been spotted recently in the Chesapeake Bay, so our

East Coast friends will no doubt start to learn about this animal soon.

 

FYI, the animals aren't just killed and left. The pelts are used for fur,

and the meat has been approved for human consumption (ew).
